Father’s day dining Smile Jun 17, 2019

We visited on Father’s Day and it was packed. Filled with People Of different races here to enjoy madam Kwan’s passionately made food. Ever since madam kwan’s closed down in Singapore’s vivo it. KL is the only place I can get my Nasi Bojari fix! It comes with a huge piece of chicken that is crispy on the outside and juicy and succulent on the inside, along with beef rendang, sweet prawns and bojari rice

The char kway teow also has a nice wok hei and loads of prawns and sotong! I’m always satisfied with any meal at madam Kwan!

Fresh Fish and more Smile Jun 06, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Seafood | Ramen/Udon/Soba

Located along a row of shop houses facing the main road. I was surprised to find a quality sushi and japanese restaurant. My friends who lived around the area raved that it was the  best fresh japanese sushi place and recommended that it was "cheap" for the quality we were getting.

I couldn't wait to look through the menu. There were 3 different menus, one for sashimi, one for sushi and one for cooked food. Very soon our table was covered with menus as we had a big group of about 2 families and friends. We were offered a private room with japanese style seating arrangement. It was cosy but a bit narrow. I'm quite clumsy so it was a chore to get up and go elsewhere. There wasn't any buttons to call for service. So I had to slide the door open and yell for service.

1. Sashimi Mori 148RM++ for 3 pax

The combination of the Sashimi Mori was the best! All the fish was fresh and practically melted in my mouth. You wouldn't have to chew any of the sushi. It was so flavourful by it's own. At this point, I did agree with my friend that the quality of the fish here was indeed fresh and value at this price point.

2. Salmon Belly Sashimi 55.80RM++ for 2 servings

The colour of the ikura and salmon belly says it all, "extremely fresh". The ikura was bursting with juicy goodness. The salmon belly here was so smooth, it melted in my mouth almost immediately once I ate it. for 55.80RM++, this is totally worth it.
3. Shisamo 15.80RM++

The staff offered us 2 types of shisamo, one was fried and one was grilled. Both tasted the same to me but neither of them was crispy, slightly disappointing.

4. Hotate Nigiri 75.60RM++ for 4 servings

The scallops were fragrant and again, melted in my mouth. It was so fleshy and definitely couldn't get enough of this.

5. Tempura Mori 37.80RM++ for 2 servings

The tempura serving portion was pretty small and pretty much all the tempura pieces disappeared with a blink of an eye. The batter was light, airy and crispy.

6. Chawanmushi Ikura 13.90RM++

Definitely getting this again, on my next visit. The ikura was extremely fresh and the chawanmushi was soft, silky and almost pudding-like. The flavour of the chawanmushi was extremely good. It wasn't too salty, but yet you could taste the essence of the chicken, prawn and mushroom into the chawanmushi. They definitely got the steaming timing down to perfection.Overall : A great place to have sushi in a comfortable dining area. Just note, when the staff try to push you to buy something that is "rare", don't go for it. They got us to buy some extremely expensive shellfished sashimi that we had no idea what it was, except that the staff claimed it was the last one.. Don't waste your time. Just go for the Sashimi Mori and Salmon Belly

Honey Toast,! Smile May 23, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western variety | Café

Located in a rather new district in Mount Austin is Chapter 1. Everything seems very new inside the cafe. There's fake grass lining the outdoor dining area, catered to smokers or maybe to customers with pets. They market themselves as  a tapas, beer, wine hang out spot that has LCD TVs, to catch sports events at night? But on a saturday afternoon when I visited, they were showing AFC, pretty apt! They also have a couple of new darts machine in the back, for some leisure darting, while having a couple of beers with your friends. Chapter 1 provides  a very comfy and cosy environment to hang out. The staff are attentive and they were very quick to refill our glasses of water.

Taking a look at the menu, they have a few all day breakfast options and then some pizzas and spaghettis are available daily only after 5pm. There's a little bit of everything here, including some desserts. Having done my research before visiting Chapter 1, I knew that I had to try their honey toast. They actually only sell 1 honey toast, but it's definitely all over instagram!1. Quattro Formaggi 18RM ++

The cheese pizzas was a thin crust pizza. The edges of the pizza crust was almost like a khong guan cream cracker! The cheese however, just tasted normal, apparently 4 types of cheese was used in it. The cheese layer didn't quite stick to the pizza, so it was almost like eating a layer of cheese that was gently placed onto of a cream cracker. Nothing fantastic for me, but it serves 2.

2. Iced Strawberry Green Tea Milk $14++

As a matcha lover, I had to order this. This was a pale green matcha milk drink that was served on top of a layer of strawberry syrup. Interestingly, after I had evenly stirred the drink. I could distinctly taste both strawberry and matcha in every sip! I would first be able to taste the subtle green tea bitterness, followed by the sweetness of the strawberry syrup. I do recommend you give this drink a try!

3. Honey Toast 24.90RM++

So the highlight of the meal was the honey toast, served with berries ice cream, more like sorbet. It was pretty impressive. A lot of effort and care was taken in plating this dessert. I also liked how the syrup was dripping down from one side. The berries ice cream had lots of little black dots in the ice cream, showcasing that real fruit was used. It was slightly on the sour side of ice cream sugar levels. But it was well complimented by the sweet red strawberry syrup.

The mix of fresh fruits was both appealing to the eyes and to my tummy. The exterior of the toast had a very thin wall, which I liked. Each rectangular piece of toast on the inside was evenly buttered and almost melted in my mouth along with the berries ice cream. This honey toast definitely met my expectation and I see why everyone keeps ordering this. I just wish that Chapter 1 would have more variations of this honey toast.

Colorful coffee and desserts OK May 17, 2016

Categories : Western variety | Café | Pizza/Pasta | Steaks / Chops | Desserts

Located at a corner of Sutera is UFB. It's one of the newer comers to Sutera, having just opened it doors just under  a year ago. It is more well-known for their desserts, such as cakes and their newly created parfaits, which has been hitting instagram.

The second you waltz through the front door, you cannot help but turn and stare at the huge cake displays. All the cake slices are priced at 7.90RM++, the more interesting cakes that caught my eyes were the ondeh ondeh cake, and the Cheesy Pleasure. They also sold a wide range of cheesecakes like (red velvet, green tea mousse, oreo, new york, triple) I counted at least 7 variations of cheesecakes!

1. Blue Coral 7.90RM++

I had seen posts of a blue colour coffee at UFB and couldn't find it on the menu. The staff couldn't really speak english so I just whipped out my phone and pulled out an iphone picture and the staff immediately understood what I wanted.

Yes, it is a pretty shade of blue, but disappointingly, it just tasted strange, almost like a cup of bubble gum flavoured water. It wasn't hot, it was mildly lukewarm at best. There was barely any latte art either, in comparison to the instagram posts I had seen earlier. Maybe it's because I visited on  a saturday night at 9pm+ and they were swarmed with orders and can't cope? I'm not giving any excuses for them, but I would just consider this as a novelty drink. I should've just gone for an actual coffee drink instead.

2. Lychee Martini Souffle 16.90RM++

I had never seen or tried a lychee martini souffle before and I was intrigued to try one. It took probably 20 minutes for them to prepare this, which was expected. The souffle was soft with a fragrant egg aroma which got me all excited.

The egg souffle was light with a smooth, melt-in-mouth texture that resembled a hybrid of wipped cream and milk foam. I'll admit having tried other souffles before. This definitely wasn't on the top of the "Must Try" souffes. The lychee martini taste was so subtle, I felt like I partially cheated lol. Nonetheless, for souffleholics, they might be satisfied with the strong notes of egg goodness!

3. Ondeh Ondeh Cake 7.90RM++

I love ondeh ondeh cakes and thanks to the friendly staff behind the counter, this girl spoke mandarin! Woohoo! We can communicate! She recommended me to try this and I was blown away. The soft, cushiony ondeh ondeh sponge was chiffon-like, so light, so soft and so fluffy! Though the ondeh ondeh flavour wasn't intesnse, the layers of gula melaka in between the sponge was distinct with a sweet note. Sweet enough to be eaten on its own. The ondeh ondeh cakes here are officially my favourite.

4. Cheesy Pleasure 7.90RM++

Instead of getting a cheesecake, I decided to go with Cheesy Pleasure which was topped off with shreds of cheese! The white cake sponges was milky and sweet. They layers of cheese in between the sponges hd full-bodied notes of cheese flavour, coupled with the lingering sweetness in the shredded cheese. The cake was soft, fluffy and not too dense. Definitely another clear winner here at UFB.

Overall : Skip the novelty drink and souffle, go for the cakes!

Located in the busy Sutera region, is Life Cafe. It's been here for awhile even though it's my first time visiting from across the causeway. My friend who is from Sarawak recommended me to try this, as it was authentic and I was told the noodles were air-flown in from Sarawak! Talk about being true to your roots!The menu was pretty straight forward. Open it up and it tells you the history of Sarawak and Life Cafe. On the first page of the food menu, you will see their vegetarian menu. I zoomed in onto the mushrooms noodles, being a mushroom lover.

The interior is rather dim with wooden fixtures and bamboo decorations on the wall. It gives you a very rustic feel as you walk into the air-conditioned cafe. Despite it's traditional feeling, they serve up modern dishes with a Taiwanese twist. There was even bubble tea and the Taiwanese favourite papaya milk drinks.

The papaya milk drink had an option for sugar level, 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. I decided to go with the healthier option at 25%. It was just right. It tasted rather natural for me as I hate drinks doused with syrup that takes away the flavours of the fruit. My friend had the iced milo and I don't know how they do it, or if they blended it, but the milo mixture was very well distributed and it was smooth, almost like a milo ice cream that had melted!

I had the mushroom noodles that was tossed in a signature sauce and served with juicy and sizeable mushroom slices. Served together was a seaweed soup and fermented vegetables to give you a sour combination of the dish.  I loved the stewed chinese black mushrooms together with the thin, springy QQ noodles that carried off a distinct fragrance.

I would've loved to have an egg in the dish too, to add on a different consistency to the noodles. But the curry sauce for the mock chicken chop also helped! The curry itself was more towards the Japanese curry sauce. It wasn't spicy, it was subtly sweet as well. Reminded me of the McDonalds curry sauce.

The omelette was thin and was more doughy than eggy for some reason. I wished that it could've been most crisp. But it had a soggy texture even though I started on it, right after it was served to us. The mock chicken chop had a pleasant umami flavour with the fragrance and crunch from the edges of the "chicken". Even for pieces that were drowned in the curry sauce, they still maintained a crispy texture throughout. The seaweed soup which was slightly bland was cooked with seaweed. I liked that the saltiness of the soup was light, as it helped offset the fermented vegetables
.
Overall : A nice chill out location at night, great food and reasonable prices. There's free WIFI too. Service was prompt and attentive.
