Char Siew Rice OK Jul 31, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung

We checked in and starved walked along Chulia Street to look for food and stumbled into this crowded Chicken Rice and CharSiew place located in a retro looking painted blue restaurant.

The Char Siew is nice but has too many burnt edges. The Siew Yoke is crispy but the portion is too little tongue Mom ordered different cuts of the Char Siew that I'm not sure what it's called but it's melt in your mouth kinda meat. We didn't order roast chicken.

It would be nice if nasi minyak (rice with chicken fat- yuck) is served instead of just white rice. We are also given a bowl of sweet sauce for the Char Siew and watercress soup to go with the rice. The food clears up pretty fast with its constant stream of customers so be there before 1pm! I would go there again to try their roast chicken! MSG level is mild.

Penang Road Chendol Smile Jun 21, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Malaysian variety | Stall / Warung | Desserts

There's two chendol stalls located on this street and there's an ongoing debate of which stalls churned out the best cendol. Left or Right? My advise is just eat from both side and compare it yourselves.

Personally, please do not flame me, I prefered Melaka Cendol. mad Where they poured the thick gula melaka syrup on top of the shaved ice with thick coconut milk and tasty firmer cendol with heavy pandan aroma. Surrounded with antiques and prehistoric artifacts in Jonker88 at Jonker's street. tongue

Penang's version had softer cendol, brown sugar syrup, kidney beans and melting shaved ice that is not so sweet. Surrounded with zooming motorcycles, dusty lanes and slurping a bowl of ice under the hot sun next to weary tourists. Still a must-try at Penang!

Exactly same as pictured! Smile Jun 20, 2012

The 2 lady sitting behind the stall picture in taken/provided by Open Rice, it looked exactly the same when I was there! shocked

The friendly lady asked where I'm from and asked me why I asked her not to put prawn paste on my CCF (chee cheong fun). smile

I eat my CCF with only red sweet sauce found only in Ipoh and Penang. In KL, they don't use this sauce but preferred to use hoi sin sweet sauce. No sesame for me too but fried shallots are okay. This shop has no fried shallots though.

I loved my simple CCF, each strand of rice-fragrant CCF is well oiled and smooth. Delicious, simple and cheap!

Looking at the picture, I think the aunty is very generous with the sauce too smile MSG level is mild.

Char Ho Fun OK Jun 20, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Noodles

After a short visit to Kek Lo Si Temple we made a stop at this food court for some Penang yummies. This stall caught our attention because we have never seen menu like this in KL before: Fried Fish Bihun, Black Vinegar Ee Mee, Char Ho Fun and Yee Fu Mee.

Out of curiosity, we ordered fried fish bihun which is essentially bihun tossed with dark soy sauce, sliced cabbages and mustard green topped with fried dory fish tongue We like the taste of this simple light dish even though it lacked the usual fried noodle wok hei. We might even try to cook this at home. RM4.5 for a decent portion. Add 50 sen for egg (we didn't). MSG level is mild.

Chicken Rice in Penang? OK Jun 20, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Steaks / Chops

We got lost looking for New World Park near Tune Hotel and the BF wanted to eat here no matter what because he was starved. So we had chicken rice in Penang bowl

To be fair, it's already 3pm so we're the only one left in the 2 shop lots refurbished restaurant. I can imagine the place to be packed during lunch hours.

Super starved BF ordered siew yok rice with fishballs soup and beansprouts. I ordered chicken rice. The roasted chicken is smooth and nice.

However the siew yok is so so, quite dry and cold. The chili sauce is too watery and lacking the garlicky taste that I liked. The rice is not fragrant enough. bowl

We paid RM20+ for the meal and the MSG level is medium.
