Laksaaa Smile Jul 27, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Stall / Warung | Noodles

You cannot deny that laksa is one of the famous delicacies in Penang. On my way to Kek Lok Si, we spotted a huge crowd around this stall (indicator that you should try it). Customers may sit at the food court across but only at specific seats to not interrupt the business of the others.

Seeing tables ordering 8-15 bowls of laksa, we finally understood why as we filled our tummies with it. The soup was murky with mackerel and loads of prawn paste. Underneath was the usual laksa ingredients like onions and cucumber. Noodles were perfect and the whole bowl tasted amazing combined. It was not too spicy too.

Coconut jelly Smile Jul 27, 2012

This is no ordinary coconut seller! Joez Coconut sells Coconut Shake, Pandan Coconut, Coconut Products and most interestingly, Coconut Jelly which is their star product.

Looks like a normal coconut from outside but..

It's filled with jelly! According to the website, it's made from pasteurized fresh coconut juice extracted from young fruits and passed through a 'secret' process that turns the liquid into semi solid form of silky smooth jelly. The jelly is sweet and tastes of coconut (obviously..). It's so soft and smooth, even better than agar-agar! Very refreshing when eaten cold.

Hokkien Mee Smile Aug 07, 2012   (Related Review)

The serving looks smaller here as I have already moved some to another bowl to share. There were some medium sized prawns inside, hiding under the noodles. All fresh and sweet. The soup wasn't too spicy compared to several other bowls of Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee) I tried in Penang. It had just the right amount of taste and spiciness. The noodles did a good job in absorbing the taste and I thought it was tasty.

Fried oyster Smile Aug 07, 2012

A fresh serving of oh chien! Although the oysters here are smaller than some other places, there are plenty of them in this dish! Glad they were not stingy and we felt we got our money's worth of food. The oysters are fresh, juicy and meaty. They had a natural sweet/fresh taste that went well with the slightly salty egg. Everything was soft, smooth and simply delectable.

Cendol Smile Aug 03, 2012

Another dish you have to try in Penang is cendol/chendul! This little stall is located in a side lane that is slightly hidden if you are not observant. How do you know you found the right one? It will be crowded with people standing while slurping their cendol! A strange sight indeed. The bowl of cold cendol is very fragrant with gula Melaka and coconut milk. Lots of cendol and beans are floating in the sweet and salty soup.
