Bonbori OK Sep 05, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Seafood | Ramen/Udon/Soba

Bonbori, also a recent entry to the Setiawalk complex.

Swordfish sushi (RM8.90+ for two pieces), suitably fresh & fleshy.

Pink prawns, perpetually a pleasure. Not a ripoff for RM8.90+.

Akagai sushi (RM9.90+). Toppings are OK, but the rice might border on bland.

Smoked duck sushi (RM6.90+). A bit supermarket-ish, the processed meat.

Coming full circle with more sea urchin sushi, this time costing RM15 per piece, exactly 2.5 times what Makiya's version costs, but the truth is, it definitely is doubly pleasurable, for folks willing to pay the price.

Sake, hot & cold. We're leaning toward the latter these days.

Donutes OK Sep 05, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Café | Sweets/Snack | Bakery / Cake / Kuih

No cronuts are available at Puchong's Donutes (so far), but this Malaysian offshoot of a Taiwanese chain makes up for that with its hyper-convenient, 24-hours-everyday business hours. It's like the 7-Eleven of pastry cafes.

Even at midnight, the Taiwanese 'rosong' bread (RM5.80), a smoothly dense & mildly sweet loaf, retains something akin to a morning's freshness.

Taiwanese pineapple cakes (RM3.20) come recommended. Not bad, not too shabby at all.

V Park OK Sep 05, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Bar & Pub

A calm, cooling night at V Park At Top, Puchong's closest thing to a 'sky bar,' perched on the rooftop of the Setia Walk complex.

Sure, it's only a few floors up, but customers can nevertheless enjoy a nice view of the landscaped gardens & fountains below.

V Park features Japanese fare such as eel rolls, salmon skewers & oysters with ponzu sauce. Fair enough for folks seeking the basics.

Sake, shochu & cocktails complement the cuisine. A shot of sake seems unconscionably pricey at RM38 though; the RM20 Gimlet cocktail's the cheaper bet.

There's ambition here, but a less unenthusiastic service team might help perk things up.

All in all, the setting's the star attraction. Could become a fun hangout, with a few tweaks.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot OK Sep 05, 2013
Categories : Western variety | Bar & Pub

This speakeasy-style lounge, showcasing whisky & cigars, is making Medan Damansara even more of a magnet for patrons needing a nice night out after office hours.

Shrouded in masculine shades on the second floor above this row's renowned restaurants, Whisky Tango Foxtrot might look like a gentleman's club, but tongue-in-cheek signboard aside, rest assured that women are welcome here.

Cigars aplenty for aficionados, hailing from Cuba, Cameroon, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua & more. Folks forking out membership fees can secure private humidors inscribed with their own initials to store their purchased cigars.

Whiskies & wine are available only by the bottle; our wallets might endure a hit.

Kaihomaru (Starhill branch) OK Aug 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Hotel Dining | Seafood | Fine Dining

It's the end of an era on Starhill's Relish Floor, as Kaihomaru replaces Gonbei San as this mall's main upmarket Japanese restaurant.

The name should sound familiar; this is run by the folks behind Federal Hotel's Kaihomaru. They'll be closing that outlet soon & focusing on this Starhill spin-off.

Kaihomaru's sashimi platter (RM168++) looks like a real brochure of oceanic pleasures.

Everything's reputedly flown in from Japan; the highlight's the sea urchin, more mellow in flavor & creamier than expected.

Tuna fans, check out this bowl of rice topped with a triumphant triumvirate of 'akami' red meat, 'chutoro' medium-fatty flesh & 'otoro' succulent-sweet belly. RM98++.

Mentaiko (RM28++), not fried but left beautifully soft & supple, spicy & savory.

Well-presented flatfish karaage (RM18++). Tender battered flesh & bones crisp enough to chew.

The sole, surprising letdown: Anago tempura (RM29++), conger eel that shouldn't taste so bland.
