Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe Smile May 30, 2016

With new Cafes popping out once in a while in Singapore, it may seem a norm but I was rather surprise to see the increase number of cafes in Johor Bahru during my recent visit there.
Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe

Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe

Chaiwalla & Co. is an open air cafe which you cannot find in Singapore with tables and chairs sitting on the open ground sand and cement. Having its unique part with her working space operated out of a container. If you heard of the famous Hiap Joo Bakery that sells traditional baked Banana Cake, Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe is just around the corner.

Enjoy a cup of beverage, either coffee or tea from Chaiwalla. Pies can be grabbed from here too if you decide to have some food to go along with your beverage. We ordered a cup of Thai Milk Tea at RM 9.30 and enjoy this refreshing drink under the hot weather which fits our plan in beating the heat. However if you are keen in toppings like pearls or jelly, they are available at additional cost.

Bev C'afe OK Jul 23, 2018

A walk near 15 minutes away from City Square Johor along Jalan Wong Ah Fook would be interesting if you ever explore the Cafe available there. With the good exchange rate, cross border cafe hopping as a weekend activity has turned pretty popular these days. Not only that these hipster cafes are increasing in our neighbouring country near the borders. I love the surprises thrown to me everytime we enter the cafe. Retaining the worn down and old facade, it quite interesting how their interior is furnished for the own style of cafe.

Chancing by Bev C, we would not have known that the upper storey is double up as a cafe from the clothing store till we walked pass a sign stating that. Interior is pretty spacious for a fashion boutique shop with a few racks of clothing each at one side of its perimeter.

With a little bit of backgroud, Bev C is a clothing label with original design since 2013. They have every piece of clothing designed from the sketch and scratch. They have a philosophy believing in "Seeking you own style" rather that cultivating a culture of "following the trend blindly". Further more adding a line saying Own your Style or Stay Naked.
Rustic Interior

Rustic Interior

It is unpretentious in its rustic outlook with flooring tiled with the olden kind of 1 x 1 cm square tiles. I walked up the flight of wooden stairs with additional care as I heard them creaked and moan under my feet, fearing that the steps might be not sturdy enough to accommodate my weight.

Seating is pretty limited with narrow walkways however I would say that the ambiance are not too bad. With a packed Saturday afternoon, we were ushered to the seats by the windows looking out to a big tree as well as the opposite shop houses.

While waiting for the food, we inquire the service staff for the latest password knowing that the previous "giveme5dollar" has been changed. We were given yet another password that will never fail to give a smile on our face, that is "askyourfriend".

Doing the so mainstream thing that everyone here does, we ordered their Chocolate Mint Pie which gain quite a number of good comments by the past patrons. Chocolate Mint Pie was served on an IKEA wooden board. The pie was totally out of my expectation for it looks so cool in its beveled minty green topped with a dark brown cookie. With a distinctive layer of mint from the top and bottom filled with chocolaty flavored pie cradled by the charcoal crust, such combination was perfect for us as pie was not too sweet.

Lemon Tea was frozen in cubes and served with a slice of lemon in a cup. Additional lemon tea is given in a separate flask. Taste is rather normal.

Perhaps we have more to talk about for the Butterfly Pea Cubes for that it was not very common quencher served in the Cafe. The cubes were frozen with its flower and stalks, not really suitable to put the cubes in your mouth unlike the Ice Cube Lemon Tea. It tasted a tad light and refreshing on its own. For more distinctive flavour, you may want to add the lime juice given to alter the taste.

There are still a number of Cafe that we yet to explore in that area. Each and every one has its own uniqueness. I don't mind coming back again, however given so much choices there, its more likely I would be another place during my next Cafe Session.

http://www.umakemehungry.com/2018/07/restoran-hua-mui.html

With so many breakfast choices in Johor Bahru, we have given up our Hotel Breakfast and decide to indulge in the local food journey on a Sunday morning. Hua Mui is less than 15 minutes walk from City Square and is pretty accesible. They are established in 1946 serving up stomach comforting food to both locals as well as tourists. Take a look at the amount of people outside the shop, it really stunned me upon reaching. Luckily, the waiting time was short with the high turnover rate for breakfast.

The interior is an old school charm and a reminiscent of how Singapore Coffee Shop used to be. From the gates to the vintage floor tiles, this is a very good experience to some who have not seen it back home.

Interior

Restoran Hua Mui consist of 2 levels. Despite the morning crowd, the flight of stairs linking to the upper level was closed with a signage indicating "Atas Tutup" meaning Closed. However such scene did not stop the crowd from coming, instead you can see many of them patiently waiting for their turn.

A look at the cover of menu already tells what one should order. Other than that, I would say like menu is extensive, comprising of both local and western cuisine.

Menu

We begin our breakfast in the most Singaporean / Malaysian way with half boiled eggs .

Semi Boiled Eggs - RM 1.20 / Pcs

Semi Boiled Eggs - RM 1.20 / Pcs

Condiments were all laid on the table. Besides the usual Yakun half boil eggs I had, these eggs will be my favourite too. The black sauce was different bringing out its sweetness and boiling of eggs were skillfully stopped at the perfect timing to achieve such precise standard.

Sauce is good Even the drinks were served in the old school kind of glasses that we have in our coffeeshops.

Kopi - RM 2.00, Lemon Barly & Lemon Juice - RM 3.50

Kopi - RM 2.00, Lemon Barly & Lemon Juice - RM 3.50

Each Margarine Toast was fragrant and given with a pinch of sugar. If need be, tad on it to enhance its taste. The toast was slightly thicker and crispy on the edges, totally my kind of breakfast.

Margarine Toast - RM 1.60 (Right)

Butter on the toast had blend in well with the sweetness of Kaya in the toast.

Butter & Kaya Toast - RM 2.00

Hua Mui Breakfast set is basically home cook food and making us feel at home. The breakfast consist of fried bun, potatoes wedges, hot dogs, tomato, egg and green peas with light brown gravy.

Hua Mui Breakfast - RM 7.90

The plate of noodle tasted familiar and homely till I was prompted if resemble Chilli Crab sauce. Yes, absolutely. The humble and flavourful Mee Mamak resemble a plate of Mee Goreng, however what we were served was delicious making me having more than what I suppose to have although I was supposed to have just only a mouth or two for testing. The style of a wetter version noodles instead of our usual dry mee goreng had gain a few nods from my breakfast buddies. Taste aside, Hua Mui was generous with their ingredients such as eggs and fishcakes.

Mee Mamak - RM 8.00 T

The Hainanese Chicken Chop that everyone is raving in the social media that this is a must try if you ever go to Restoran Hua Mui. In fact presentation (green peas, tomato, potato wedges) and chicken chop gravy is similar to their Hua Mui Breakfast in the above picture.

Hainanese Chicken Chop - RM 15.90

Hainanese Chicken Chop - RM 15.90

Chicken chop batter was perfectly done in crisp and was not oily at all. Verdict: Yes, you should try it out when you are at Hua Mui. Comparing the chicken chop we have in IT Roo Cafe, I will prefer this.

Having lesser of the traditional coffee shop and breakfast we have these days back home, I'm quite keen to such meals whenever I am in overseas. With the long list on the menu, we can never finish trying all their recommended food in a breakfast. Should there be any chance, I will want to be back again.

Fei Zhou (Restoran Famous Congee) OK Sep 26, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Porridge

Fei Zhou, when translated from the chinese characters means "Flying Porridge" and the way it is pronounced, rhymes with Africa. It is just a stone throw away from the popular Sutera Mall that most of us has been visiting.

Fei Zhou Interior was modern with recommended and signature dishes pictures on the wall. Premises is air-conditioned and fixed with ceiling fans to cool the temperature in the restaurant.

Environment

Beverages
We started with some sides while waiting for the porridge and rice. Abalone mushrooms were deep fried and with its spicy soury dipped, I found that this is something special and not yet found in Singapore so far.

Deep Fried Mushroom - RM 10.80

Dont miss out famous dish like the Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables to complement with your porridge dishes. The pork were braised till tender together with garlic gloves and preserved vegetables.

Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetable - RM 15.80
With hints of peppery taste among the fragrant fried rice, these air flown salmon was cut into dices and topped the rice. Impressed by the bright orange presentation among the white, yellow and green ingredients in the rice, the taste was relatively above average. A little peeve is that the Salmon may be more on the fishy side.

Air Flown Salmon Fried Rice - RM 18.80
Every pot of congee is served in the earthen claypot with a base wrapped with aluminium. The congee's depth of flavour come from the long hours of cooking the broth and rice grains were slowly cook to the texture. To enhance the flavours, spring onions as well as fried onions were added.

Sliced Fish Congee - RM 13.80
Sea Bass Mix the garnishing well. The pot of minced pork & century Egg Congee was savoury with generous amount of Minced pork and egg given.

Minced Pork & Century Egg Congee - RM 7.20
My bowl of congee won't be completed without these little fried fritters in it. If you are like me, mixed some of these into the porridge and enjoy the bites.

Fried Fritters
Break the egg yolk and stir the fried fritters into the porridge.

Congee
It was a pleasant experience to have enjoy pots of porridge and kinds of dishes by Fei Zhou. I don't mind popping by once in a while for simple food like this.

Heard about coconut ice cream? For those who have been to Thailand, having Ice Creams in a coconut bowl is perhaps nothing new to you. With such desserts getting popular nowadays, the cafe in Johor Bahru did not forget about this trendy dessert from its neighbouring country.

As soon as we entered into the Cafe, the friendly staff greeted us. There is a leading staircase up to the second level, unfortunately they are still working on the dining space upstairs and I guess the place will soon be packed with patrons both lower and upper levels.

Interior was industrial theme and spacious with ample of seating. There is a corner with bar table that was classified as reserved.

Coconut has quite a number of benefits, do you know them all?

With 2 scoops of original Coconut flavour ice cream and 1 scoop of Thai Milk Tea Ice Cream served in the coconut reminds me of the time when we visited Bangkok's Chatuchak. Toppings over here are generous in the sense that you are allow to add your on toppings at the side of the counter. We added peanuts and crunch in this case. Making a complete set with additional RM 1.00, we were offered a cup of coconut water.
Love it!
