The Infamous Lim Sisters’ Curry Mee in Air Itam , Penang!

There are numerous Curry Mee stalls in Penang and each stall has its own version of soup and ingredients. Some have their coconut based stock reddish while some comes in a lighter pale color version, at times known as White Curry Mee. The basic ingredients would be pig’s blood, cockles (sie hum), taupok and cuttlefish. There are also different kinds of add-on such as curry chicken, fish balls, gizzard, chicken feet and fish cakes .

The Lim sisters has been doing their recipe for Penang style curry mee in air itam for decades , recently that these sisters caught in attention of people thru social media . The unique comes over as they setup their stall on the ground different than others hawker stall . located near the bridge in Air Itam a Methodist Church .

The sisters of Teochew descent have been selling the mouthwatering Noodle for over 60 years , Sitting on low wooden benches , the sisters will scoop curry from a huge aluminium pot into the bowls of yellow noodle with cockles and cuttlefish .

The broth has a special fragrance to it and the cuttlefish is really good . The sister’s curry gravy is not sweet but the sambal is awesome and spicy . I also adored the spicy chewy squid and bean curd puffs . Drop over to the stall at Air Itam market to try the classic flavorful Curry Mee managed by two sisters .

Asam Laksa , Air Itam Smile Oct 03, 2015

Asam Laksa in Air Itam plays the first role in Penang island . I won't miss it when everytime I visit Penang .

One of the best things living in Malaysia is the foods readily available to all, at anytime or everywhere . I love Malaysian food too much .

The strong aroma of the fish chunk , the sourness of the soup and the quality of the prawn paste definitely attracted us all the time .

The uncle will scoop the boiling hot soup and bath the noodle few times to make the noodle cooked and make sure the gravy stays on the noodle to make sure the thick rice noodle get covered evenly with the delicious thick broth .

The thick broth is made from mackerel and served with thick shrimp paste with aromatic mint leaves , onions and chilies . The broth is deliciously sour and not too spicy . I liked the spongy texture of the thick rice noodles which was melt in my mouth , and the thick mackerel broth was well complemented .

After we Visited Penang Hill(Bukit Bendera) on the evening , Three of us was hungry and spot a coffee shop that surrounded by alot of different foods hawker around and makes me made a hard press on my brake pedal .

Sin Guat Keong Coffee Shop is located along Kimberley Street . The street become alive and happening since all the hawkers open their business just beside the road attached with the Coffee Shop and more ten different local foods can be enjoyed .

One hawker that was more busy than the rest was the man cooking up "Char Kuey Teow" . As you saw the stack of waiting plate His orders are never ending means you will definitely Order since it was one of the famous local foods in penang .

I can tell you , this was the most worst "Char Kuey Teow" in town , tasteless!! . I didn't even finish it .

walk around again and I found this , what we ate In KL when it was viral with instant noodle White Curry Mee(MY kuali) Last year . I'm sure You all knows which Instant Noodle i'm talking about and I felt Suprise and desperately wanted to try , I ordered One bowl for taste testing .

It was worst than the instant noodlee White Curry Mee . oily chili paste and the soup base is tasteless , HO JIAK?? bULLSHIT!

Koay Teow Soup , This was a delicious, light pork broth with pork filets, pork bits, and fish balls with delicate noodles . we had another bowl since it was so delocious .

Chicken feet with soy eggs and pork innards . I'm big fan of pork innards and Chicken feet , The chicken feet is soft and the sauce was awesome . Eggs were braised in soy with the Chicken feet . For those who not really like the innards and chicken feet , they also have chicken wings and thigh that braised in soy too . The Kuey Teow soup was nice with Crispy mice fried garlic that gave the soup base a delightful fragrant .

Doesn’t matter if you call it orh lua, orh jian or fried oyster omelette. They all mean the same thing , sizzling egg omelette, spring onions, chilli and the sight of fresh, plump oysters .

We were satisfied with the delicious meal except the "char kuey teow and white curry mee . It wasn’t expensive as we spent around RM40 on food and drinks. It was exciting and refreshing. This had set the barometer for us to what good Malaysian Street food should be like .

Goh Huat Seng , Penang OK Oct 11, 2015
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Steamboat/Hotpot | Seafood

Goh Huat Seng, one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang has been in operation for more than fifty years .

We reach around 7p.m and parking kinda hard to find if nearby and don't simply park at the illegal yellow line , the bandaraya her is active till 9 p.m , they will lock your wheel and leave a number to contact if you find out yours car been lock . just park abit far to avoid been lock Because I been seeing live when other vehicle been lock .

We are lucky that still have table for three of us since the restaurant is pack .At Goh Huat Seng they count by plate , portion in one plate is very small and little .

We order four plate with the price tag RM70 , What Do you think , isit worth ??

It is one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang . Located at Kimberley Street , the traditional steamboat still comes lighted up with charcoal . traditional pots heated over charcoal with clear chicken soup as the soup base and ingredients including mushrooms, fish anf vegetable . Their steamboat comes with a variety of dishes, freshly cut and served . Goh Huat Seng has stuck strictly to traditions passed down through generations .

This place is with air-conditioned that will fell comfortable while steamboat-ing . Many locals and also visitors from here or outstation will visit this place and on weekends , this place is usually packed so the customers have to wait till empty table available .They even provide a mini fan that run on batteries to speed up the charcoal to burn . Traditional metal steamboat pots that looks antique that Only a few restaurants uses this type of pots .

The steamboat pot with a bottom section where hot coals were placed , followed by a round trough that went around the bottom coal section , and then Fire coming from the middle to release hot air and flames .Blended chillie and garlic was a very important component of any hot pot meal . At Goh Huat Seng they only serve with sliced chilies and not a good component for the hot pot but there was one ingredient that really made the difference , the deep fried garlic need pour in the hot pot and makes the soup taste better . The soup broth was taste nice sweet after all the stuff been put in for a moment ago .

It’s not a street food cheap meal, that’s for sure, but I thought it was worth it for a traditional Chinese Malaysian steamboat with great exprience .
