Lunch Cry Dec 15, 2015

One day my mom decided to bring the family to this new place for lunch. She had heard reviews from a colleague that the food here was quite good. I was a little apprehensive because sometimes the food ends up being somewhat disappointing. This time however, I was on the fence a little bit.

I can't remember exactly what salad this was. But I remember that I really did not like it because of the fried stuff which I believe was a mixture of shallots and something else. That just made the salad super greasy and gross which one would not ever think would happen when it comes to a salad. After one piece of lettuce, I just turned away and so did my mom.

To share we ordered the mushroom carbonara and.... It left little to be desired because the pasta was dry as anything without so much as a hint of cream sauce - at least it wouldn't be too cloying. However there was no flavour save for the tiniest bit of sprinkling of fake cheese on the top. Plus for the price that we paid, the portion was really quite small.

The saving grace of our meal was this grilled/roasted half a chicken. The sauce was sweet and also slightly salty which reminded me of teriyaki sauce a little bit, but maybe just a touch bit burnt. It was alright, nothing too much to should about especially the cold fries that came as a side. Though in comparison with the previous two horrible dishes, it was almost like a salvation dish.

It is safe to say that after our terrible experience, food and service wise, we would probably never return. Not only was the food we got sub-par but the wait-staff were just poorly trained and constantly looked like they were constipating or something. That just made everything so much more worst.

Western  Cry Nov 20, 2015

I remember some few years ago my mother really liked dining at this place and at that point, so did I. However I am not sure if it was because then I had yet to have a chance to have better quality&tasting food or because the standards at Rendezvous used to be really good. Because recently my dining experience there was nothing short of extremely disappointing.

Although I do like the ambience of the place and how it's more al-fresco dining, however it isn't going to be pleasant if the weather gets any hotter. Even worst if it starts to rain when there is a big crowd dining there as there is only so many tables with 'shelters'.

For starters we ordered half a dozen of escargots with garlic & cheese sauce. Although I used to like this dish, I wasn't pleased when it arrived at our table because the snails were overcooked till it was chewy. Then somehow the sauce was only lukewarm and bland which I have no idea how that was possible.

To share, we ordered the fried chicken chop which comes with two hot dogs and a side of fries plus some steamed vegetables. There really isn't anything to shout about this dish because it was all just sub-par and not what you'd expect of a chicken chop. The meat tasted frozen and the hot dogs were the kind you would get frozen too, plus there wasn't any sauce so it's all just really dry. Not to mention bland tasting, including the fries.

Another dish we ordered was the black pepper chicken and thankfully, this was not deep fried and was an actual piece of chicken. However neither one of us was pleased by the looks of it as the meat was so-so cooked and the sauce was just a goopy mess.

After dining there for the second time recently, I am pretty sure that this would be the last place that I'd visit for a western meal. Regardless of how cheap the prices are because I can get better ones elsewhere for a little bit more.

A little underwhelmed  Cry Oct 20, 2015

After getting my errands done for the day and replenished a few of my make up things at Sephora, I decided to get something to eat. Since it was a little after lunch hour I decided to visit Ben's again after a while and expected something better than I did my previous visit. However I was to be disappointed again.

Like stated at the entrance, I waited outside to be seated while I browsed through the menu. Though I sort of already knew what I want. But I stood there and looked around for a wait-staff for five minutes without anyone attending to me. There was not a person even checking to see if they had guests waiting outside. Then why put a 'please wait to be seated' sign so far out front?

Finally I gave up waiting and just led myself inside when FINALLY a wait-staff led me to a table. Rather than wait I just ordered immediately or else I'd have wasted more of my day then I would have liked.

Don't know why, I really wanted their Portobello Mushroom burger. A while ago a friend of mine had this and it tasted good so I was hoping for the same thing again.

But I was left sorely disappointed when my meal arrived because although it took a while, my burger was less than satisfactory. The bun was not properly toasted and was borderline soggy. Portobello mushroom was not hot and bland although the burger sauce made up for that ever so slightly. The whole thing was just disappointing to say the least.

The thing that I enjoyed the most of the meal was the fries that were nice and crisp, freshly fried I presume. Also the side salad was pretty good although quite little.

This meal just reminded me of why I have not visited Ben's in a really long time. Also proves that it was a good decision made and one I intend to stick by unless they improve their service & also quality of food.

A little nostalgia. Cry Sep 24, 2015

If there's one thing I remember about Victoria Station's is how I used to wander around the 'train' and pretended like I was some atas lady in the olden days. While my family dined, I used to walk around the make-shift train dining section as my imagination went wild. Clearly I was a very funny child.

An aunt of mine's favourite place to dine with Victoria's station so she used to bring me there to eat. But that has been many years ago and it's been a long time since I last ate here so my memory of the food might be a little off. Though I remember the food tasting exceptionally good especially being one of the better places to get steaks that are not exurbently priced.

For an afternoon meal with my mom, we decided to have some steak and would rather not drive into town with the bad traffic so we chose Victoria Station. No surprise that my ideal table would be at the 'train' section but the waiter instead led us to another table despite the area where I wanted to be being entirely empty. Rather than be difficult about it we proceeded to order our meal instead.

Something that I always order is the Garlic Steak which came with a side of steam vegetables, corn and also roasted potatoes. The scent of the sauce was pretty strong so I was quite excited especially considering how my entire plate was covered in it.

Though the taste was only so so and my steak was more medium than the medium rare which I had requested it to be cooked. Also I was not happy that I only got a measly tiny five pieces of sub-par roasted potato medalions. The sides were beyond disappointing and not even the steamed corn could make up for it.

For variety sakes, my mother got the Steak with Mushroom Sauce which.... Was almost a bigger disappointment than my dish. This did not even come with a corn and that for me was just bad considering that their sides were already borderline mediocre as it is.

I don't know why, I was expecting really good food from here because of the memory I have of dining there. So when the food was way below my expectation, I was disappointed especially since we now have many other places to get equally or even better steak meals.

Overly baked eggs.  Cry Sep 10, 2015

For the regular brunch people, they would most definitely have heard of Nutmeg especially those who frequent around the Bangsar area. So after a little visit to the stores at Bangsar Village, my friends and I popped by Nutmeg for a quick bite as we were hungry midday.

Although it was late in the afternoon, there was a large crowd and the cafe could only sit so many with it's small space. Though they had a few tables placed outside of the quaint little cafe, we still had to wait a good 10 minutes before being able to get a seat.

Plus it took about two minutes for the busy wait-staff to even take notice of us. I guess they were so busy that it got slightly frustrating, but there were times where I swore neither of them wanted to even attend to us despite clearly seeing that we needed service. For a first time visit, it's safe to say that I was disappointed at that point.

Though I kept my hopes up and ordered something that I absolutely adore ordering from brunch/breakfast places. Baked eggs!
Bland. Overcooked.

Bland. Overcooked.

I was expecting a lot because many people have said that Nutmeg are very good at cooking their eggs. So I had their baked eggs with mushrooms and a side of toast. It sounded heavenly to me and I couldn't wait to dip my toast in soft coddled eggs.

But my dish took the longest to arrive and by the time it did, I was in a bit of a sour mood. Plus everything that I was hoping for really did not turn out well at all. The egg was hard and completely overcooked, the point where the yolks where borderline powdery so there goes my hope of dipping my bread in it. And the mushroom, spinach and tomatoes filling was scarce.  To top it all off, the entire thing was bland and as much as I love baked eggs, I couldn't finish this at all.

Let's just say my first visit with Nutmeg was not a pleasant one. But I am willing to give them a second chance and try other things from their menu to see if I was just unlucky that day.
