After trying their specialty fish dish, we were back again to try their other food which also came with great review from mom's friend. Since she goes there quite often whether on the way up or down from Genting, we trust her word. Also she really wanted to bring us back there again after a mini-roadtrip.

This time she ordered something specially for me. Chicken Stewed with Chinese Wine & Ginger which not many restaurants can get right. Nothing could ever come close to the one that my grandmother used to cook for the family. Until I tried New Rainbow's.

Each of us were served a bowl filled to the brim with the stewed chicken and the soup, with plenty of slithers of ginger that gave the whole thing a very nice heat.

Also as a special order and something I have never tried before, there was chunks of fried egg at the bottom of the bowl. When you take a bite of it, the egg bursts with the soup that it had been soaking in the whole time. The chicken was also incredibly tender which comes as no surprise as it was cooked in the wine and also it's own yummy juices.

Though truth be told, I was only in it for the soup which I drank by the spoonfuls even if the wine really had quite the alcohol kick. By the end of dinner my face was flushing already and that didn't even stop me from finishing up my mother's bowl of wine & ginger soup.

So far, the food here has been very good even if it is a little out of our way to go just for a meal. But if we were to ever pass by there then it would definitely be the place to stop.

Big Family Dinner  Smile Oct 06, 2015

This restaurant is a favourite place of my entire family. Although it is a little far from where we stay, we'd still drive all the way to have our dinner there. Not only is the food good, the service is amazing and also the food is not overly priced for the amazing quality in taste and portion that is given to us.

Something that is a MUST order is their steamed Kampung Chicken. The meat is tender but not mushy and the sauce that it comes with is not overly salted, but just nice & flavourful. Plus the mixture of ginger, garlic, green onions that comes with this dish makes the chicken taste even better especially when eaten with white rice.

Another thing that we really like to order is their Curry Fish Head with extra tao fu pok to absorb all the sauce. They serve this in a huge claypot filled up to the brim in bubbling curry sauce with lots of vegetables, fish head meat and also tao fu pok. The sauce is spicy and also slightly creamy without tasting like too much of coconut milk.

This dish is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE. It's the Four Heavenly Kings Vegetable Stir-Fry in Belacan. Whenever I order this at other restaurants, they use chilli boh rather than sambal belacan which results in the vegetable being doused in oil and lacking of any flavour. However here they use sambal belacan so it's very flavourful, plus they add lots of other ingredietns such as dried prawns and shallots to make the sauce even more delicious.

Almost everything that we have ever ordered from Wan Jia is super good. There is NOTHING that we were ever disappointed with and considering the many establishments these days, this is saying a lot.

Thai food galore!  Smile Sep 18, 2015

I've probably said this a million times before and I'll say it again; Thai food is one of the best food there ever will be. The flavours are always out of this world and although spicy, there's always an added kick which brings a nice surprise.

We discovered Songkhla by accident really. After craving for something spicy for a long time, we attemtped to try a restaurant that was completely new in hopes to be pleasantly surprised. And we were, very much so, which is why we will always go back to this restaurant for the same things.

As always, a must order whenever we're at a Thai restaurant is the Mango Kerabu Salad. One way to tell if the restaurant is going to be a great one is by how well their salad is and this, was fantastic!

They were not stingy in any way. There was plenty of peanuts and dried baby shrimp for crunch & also added flavour. Plus the dish as a whole had a great kick of spiciness and sourness as well. A great start to our meal.

So for the main dishes, we ordered the Steamed Siakap with Chillies, Garlic and Lime sauce. This was amaaaaazing! The dish came in a steel dish and served over blazing hot charcoals, so this way the sauce remains hot even as we dine.

Every spoonful of the 'soup' had a great punch of spicy, garlicky and sour flavours that explodes in your mouth. Plus the fish was incredibly fresh as the meat was nicely juicy and also tender. One can never go wrong with this dish and Songkhla did an amazing job.

Something that had come recommended by the waiter is their Chiang Mai Curry Chicken. Truly it was one of the best dishes I've tried from this restaurant because of how fragrant the curry is. Plus the sauce is incredibly thick and creamy from what I presume to be the coconut milk which adds a whole new depth of flavour.

The chicken meat is incredibly tender too. It's crispy from being deep bried before it is tossed into the curry where the exterior just soaks up all the sauce and infuse maximum flavour in each bite. This is a must try if anyone ever visits Songkhla because each time we ordred this, it is as good as the first time we tried it!

One of our favourite to order is also the Stir-Fried Paku in Belacan. To no surprise that Songkhla cooked this to our preference too. But in comparison to the other three dishes, this was only so so even if the belacan flavour was strong.

This is one of our favourite Thai restaurants to visit regularly because the price is also reasonable with generous portions. Go, give them a try! :3

Dinner again.  Smile Dec 26, 2015

Since we are back in Ipoh, no doubt we will go get food at one of our favourite restaurant and despite it being a holiday, we are glad that it wasn't too filled with people. So we got a table instantly and got right down to ordering because we were super hungry after a long day out - not counting to plenty of treats we had in between.

No doubt we would order the stir-fried char siew. OMG, this dish is the epitome of indulgence because the meat had perfect layers of fat & meat which is coated in the sweet sticky sauce that has caramelised onto the meat. We ordered two plates of this because one wasn't enough.

Then, because everyone love's this, we ordered baby french bean stir-fried with garlic. Simple but also very delicious which everybody loved and finished up with ease.

This was a new dish we tried that night. It is braised pork ribs with tendons and... As crazy as it sounds, this tasted heavenly because there's just so much flavour in each bite. There's a hint of sweetness from the different seasoning in the sauce but yet, not too much because there's also a savoury porky flavour. This was our first time trying this dish out of recommendation but we probably will be back just to have another plate of this.

Memories Smile Dec 15, 2015

I remember when I was younger, we would take several trips out of KL just for a getaway. Our usual place to visit is Ipoh & Penang because these two places are well known for their food. And the one place that I will always remember very fondly is Kong Heng in Oldtown Ipoh.

Whenever we eat there, the place will be filled to the brim with locals and people from other states. They are there to try the famous and very delicious noodles.

My favourite is the Ipoh Sah Hor Fun. This bowl comes with strips of chicken and prawns atop the noodles, plus some garlic chives for added flavours. Usually I never really like eating hor fun but somehow I can finish this entire bowl by myself. The taste is exactly the same as I remembered it to be and I'm happy to know that the quality plus standard never drops.

Then there's the pork noodles with lots of intestinal bits. This one is my mom's favourite and she always orders this but I usually only enjoy my own bowl of hor fun. But that day I tried a bit of this and found it to be really good too. The ingredients are plenty and the noodles are perfectly al-dente. Then the soup, it has SO much flavour that one spoonful left me quite surprised.

Then the meal is never complete unless we have a plate of tau geh simply steamed then doused with soya sauce. This represents the simple pleasures in life because it's probably the cheapest thing ever and yet, the tastiest.

Let's just say we never fail to pay a visit to this restaurant whenever we're in Ipoh or happen to be driving by.
