Hello Tok Janggut Smile Apr 01, 2016
Categories : Malay | Café

This was my second visit to Tok Janggut. The first was eons ago and it didn't leave much of an impression. But this time around i was pleasantly surprised. No kidding. This time i will definitely go back for more.

My dad was the one who dragged me there. He was ecstatic about their rojak so i obligingly ordered their rojak mee while my old man ordered the original rojak as well as a plain rotai canai. We waited for around 10 minutes before the aromatic smell of the rojak hit my nose and i literally fell in love with it.

Rojak Noodle
Served with a generous amout of shredded fresh and crunchy cucumber, crisp taugeh, sweet and succulent toufu, this dish is worthy of a king! I bet my pants Jamie Oliver would love it! Add that with the crispy balls of their vegetable batter (im not exactly sure what the ingredients are but they looked like a combination of flour, egg, green leafy veggy, carrots and mushroom) and deep fried chicken. Top all that with a thick and silky smooth gravy. Ahhh...this is heaven on earth! You have go to try this. The noodle itself was good too, though i would prefer it if they added slightly more noodles since the rest of the serving was so delicious.

Roti Canai
I dont think anyone can go wrong with plain roti canai. It was light, fluffy and crisp. Worthy of my stomach hehe.

So do come and reward your tastebuds with Tok Janggut's savory dishes.
A must try!

A visit to John's Pie is a must if you are an avid fan of pastries. For this visit, my aunt and i ordered the following:

1. Chocolate Cheese Tart
Hmm hmm. Delicious! The pastry was compact and fluffy with a very aromatic buttery taste. The filling itself was a surprise too. The top of the tart was sprinkled with lots of sweet and bitter chocolate dust and at the very bottom of the pie saw a thin slice of chocolate biscuit which complimented tart's cheesy taste. It cost RM 5 for 2 pieces, a bit pricey but the taste makes it worthwhile. Would i order it again? You bet i will!

2. Chicken Cheese Pie
John's signature chickcen cheese pie was as its name suggested. It had chicken chunks with a very light gravy (i believe they were bits of potatoes in it as well) and a generous dose of cheese. I thought it was good, plus the teddy bear imprint was very cute. But then again, ive never really tasted a bad chicken pie before. Like my aunt said, you cant go wrong with pies.

3. Dilmah Jasmine Tea & Chamomile Tea
A sip or two of flower scented teas is a must after downing cheessy pies and chocolaty tarts. And these drinks were very soothing and cooling. Me likey.

Gula Apong Ice Cream at Amigo! Smile Jun 07, 2016

Well whadya know....nestled in the heart of the Giant supermarket at Stutong is a little stall called Amigo Churros selling churros (of course) and their specialty....the gula apong ice cream.

Yeap. You read it right folks. Gula Apong. I've had ais kacang with gula apong before but with ice cream? It was a first for me and bit did it leave an impression.

You can purchase the ice cream at either rm3 or rm5. The ice cream which comes in a very very big serving comes in a plastic paper cup and you get to choose a maximum of 3 toppings to go with the ice cream. I chose chopped peanuts.

So, chopped peanuts generously sprinkled on the towering gula apong ice cream with a drizzle of melted gula apong. The taste? Heavenly! I've never tasted gula apong incorporated into ice cream before so this was a refreshing change and taste.

The ice cream is thick and creamy and the gula apong taste is strong but not too overwhelming. The peanuts give a very complimentary chewy taste to the ice cream but if you're not a peanut fan, you can opt for crushed oreos or chocolate sprinkles instead.

A must try!
Heavenly!

Destined for some Espresso Smile Jan 10, 2016

Categories : Western variety | Restaurant

Ahhhhh....twas a fine hot afternoon when my husband and I ventured into the quaint little coffee shop with our little baby fast asleep in his stroller.

Upon entering the shop, we were greeted with the sight of a wooden piano, small enough for a child of 3-4 years old to play with and yet grand enough for an adult to take Selfie with. The coffee shop is decorated with alot of motivational words printed on wooden planks and the tables themselves are made from old sawing machines. A little messy but interesting nonetheless.

Now, on to the most important thing. The food of course. We ordered a cafe latte, peppermint tea, a durian fantasy cake and a peanut butter cheesecake. Fattening foods...but exercise can came later.

The cafe latte and peppermint tea were not bad. Nothing to shout about, drinkable but not that memorable. But the cakes, Oh my, the cakes were entirely a different story. At first glance, the cakes looked only ok. Not too fancy but the staff there took the liberty of decorating the plates of the cakes ( which came in the form of mini wooden chopping boards) with words of encouragement like 'smile' & 'enjoy' in very thick and yummy chocolate sauce. Both cakes were also sprinkled with peanut bits on top to add a crunchiness to the cakes.

The durian fantasy cake surprisingly had real and really fresh tasting durian bits...not just the paste mind you but real durian 'meat'. That was a pleasant surprise for both my husband and I ( baby notwithstanding as he was snoring away). The cake itself was light and spongy, not too heavy or sweet and that compliment the heavy taste and sweetness of the durian. I will definitely come back for this cake again.

On to the peanut butter cheesecake. Full of peanut butter and rich in cheesy flavor. The first bite will make you want to dig in for more. The cake is flavorful and rich....it tasted great but do not eat this cake alone.....share it with your partner or friends. Why you might ask. As great tasting as this cake is, it can be a little to rich and after the 5th mouthful you might not  be able to take another bite.

So how would I rate this like coffee shop? Its not the best but definitely one of the better ones in kuching. You won't regret dining there..it has wonderful cakes, pleasant drinks (they even serve Spaghetti and other western good which we haven't tried) and a relaxing ambience. So do visit the shop if you happen to be in city one. You might just fall in love with it.

Route 66.... a must pass route Smile Dec 01, 2015

In the United States, Route 66 is known as a famous highway. Here in Miri, Route 66 is famous for its mouth watering dishes of cakes, sandwiches and aromatic teas and coffees.
Set in the heart of Lutong, Miri, the unobtrusive little shop has an impressive interior design with soft lighting, wooden looking counter top, and a range of encouraging mottos splashed across its wall. But the one thing that impresses most is of course it’s food...(lol, what else?)

Here’s a review of some of it’s mouth watering dishes (salivating as i write):

Amazing Pie
The name is worthy of the pie they sell, it truly is amazing. The top crust has a flaky and soft feel to it while the sides are crispy. And when you slice the pie, you can see the steam rising up and enjoy the fragrant smell of the creamy chicken chunks.

The caramel Cheese Cup Cake
A little small at first glance but this little cake packs a punch! It is extremely rich and has a wonderful salty taste to its top filling (the cheese cake) and a complimenting sweetness from the base (the dark crumbly chocolate base).

Chai Tea Latte
The volume might be a little disappointing but as you take your first sip, i swear you’ll never order another drink again. The taste of the chai tea is subtle at first but it slowly grows and leave a sweet lingering taste in your mouth.

This place is a must if you are a lover of coffee, tea and cakes. The service might be a tad bit slow (especially during weekends) but it’ll be definitely worth the wait.
