Second on the list of must-tries is the Pork Chop with Country Gravy (RM 23). There are 2 other sauces to choose from on the menu (orange cream and apples), but we find their signature country gravy to be the best! The gravy is actually the same one used in the Dog Food, so if you order the Dog Food and this Pork Chop you're actually getting a double dosage of the same sauce. Again, the sauce tastes extremely rich, silky and creamy, a great match with the juicy, tender pork chop. If you don't really fancy so much creamy goodness in your food then don't attempt this combination.

But that's not all! The mash potato is worth a mention. The mash is well-seasoned with just the right amount of salt and pepper and also perfectly pounded into a silky soft texture, with only small hints of sediment or chunks of potato inside. But the real secret lies in eating it with the country gravy - absolutely appetizingly awesome!

Dog Food? Smile Aug 15, 2012   (Related Review)

First on the list of must-trys at Betty's is this serving of fries called Dog Food (RM 9)! I know I know.. the name doesn't exactly have a very tempting ring to it, but it does make people curious, and trust me when I say it's worth trying! This starter basically only consists of fries, but it is soaked in their signature country gravy and cheese melted on top. I know it sounds simple, but you must try the fries together with the sauce to know what a good combination it makes. The sauce is extremely decadent and creamy, and the addition of cheese makes the whole thing extremely rich. The fleshy fries are lovely too, thickly cut which enables it to absorb the cream gravy all up. Oh, and it is also served on a round metal dish to complete the presentation of "dog food"! lol

There was no stopping us from grabbing 2 slices of cake for the taste! We took the 2 most interesting-looking ones, one of which was the Coconut Bounty Cake (RM 15). This had a great marriage of light white and milk chocolate mousse and coconut shavings on top, much like its namesake candy bar. The mousse was creamy and fluffy, and the light sponge layers in between weren't too sweet. The coconut shavings were a decadent topping as well, adding in that extra crunch of texture. Definitely something different that we hadn't had before, and I would recommend this to friends, even more so if you're a Bounty lover. =)

The other slice was of course the Cempedak Pistachio Cake (RM 15). We had read so much about this that we weren't going to let it go just because of a small issue like a full stomach! The cream turned out tasting very strongly of the sweet, fragrant cempedak fruit but it was toned down by the presence of the light pandan layers, with just a subtle pandan flavour. If you have friends looking for something different, or if you want to wow the family with a unique cake for a celebration, this Cempedak Cake may be for you. =D

Spotting snails on the menu, I had to have some especially when these are Grilled "Bacon" Wrapped Snails! The menu didn't say how many snails there were in one serving, but we counted about 11 snails in the plate.

At a price of RM 17, we realized these were cheaper than usual. Taste-wise, I found these quite delightful. The escargots were cooked just nice, springy instead of rubbery, and the bacon bits were nicely crispy around the edges. The accompanying garlic parsley sauce was also really flavourful and rich. However, the rest of them did think that this dish was a bit too salty for their liking. I suspect it was because of the bacon, but I had no problems with it at all. =D

One tapas seemed too little for 4 hungry mouths, so we also ordered a serving of their Burnt Cauliflower (RM 13) off their sides menu to share.

The name sounds weird (after all since when does any food sound good burnt?), but trust me when I say this burnt taste actually turns normal cauliflower into something more special! The cauliflower was cooked till tender yet still juicy, but contained a slight smoky flavour due to the charred bits. When eaten together with the light-tasting yogurt, it turned out to be a great combination. This snack ended up tasting just perfect. For once, I had no trouble with my vegetables. =P

Yum yum dim sum! Smile Aug 15, 2012   (Related Review)

Zuan Yuan is a halal restaurant, which means traditionally pork-filled dim sum like siew mai are pork-free, but we felt the ones here at Zuan Yuan were good enough, so much so that we barely missed the pork at all. The dim sum dumpling is full of well-flavoured meat and prawn, and the sprinkling of roe atop gave a nice unique taste. The prawn used was also really fresh; we could tell by the fresh sweetness of the dumpling.

Siew mai might be the normal crowd favourite, but here at Zuan Yuan it's definitely worth giving the Steamed Teo Chew Siew Mai (潮式蒸燒賣) a try too! I thought this was a unique twist to dim sum as we could taste strong spices in it, probably five spice powder. It certainly brings out the flavour of the meat more! A must try.
