Wonder dishes @ wonder mama OK Aug 14, 2013

The décor of this restaurant is comfy with a choice of indoor or outdoor dining. Of which both preserving very old school décor. With interesting designs and decoration, you find yourself sitting in one of those old coffee houses with tiny floor tiles and those steel cups.

A quick look at the menu and I realized this place serves ordinary coffee shop dishes with many fancy and expensive ingredients. The variety offers a fusion of dishes from a mix culture and tradition. Starting with the highly recommended starter called the Dancing Squid. This is a pan fried squid with butter cod fish roe and celery that is priced at RM 15.90 and cleverly served in a glass jar for that touch of great presentation.

The squid is very nicely done, still maintaining the bouncy texture but not overcooked so it doesn’t become rubbery. The celery gives the strong aroma and at the same time complimenting the texture of the squid so you have both the soft and bouncy alongside the fresh crunch of the celery.

I tried the soup as well. A common Chinese dish called the ‘shiong tong’ clam is improvised into the Miso soup ‘shiong tong’ clam. It is prepared with goin bean, ginger, chili padi, and garlic. Good thing those clams are pretty fresh and not fishy at all. The soup however, lacks a little sweetness for after all miso is the flavour of soy bean.

Next is the awesome Malay food every Malaysian is familiar with. The Maggi Goreng Special or in this case is called the Special seafood maggi goreng. Fried with generous and huge amount of seafood, there is sotong, prawns, scallop, mixed vegetable, onions and egg and served with this special homemade spicy sauce for RM 14.90.

For that price, you get three or maybe four plates of maggi goreng in the mamak but I am sure you see why. The seafood is fresh and the special homemade spicy sauce is amazing. if you are already a fan of Maggi mee goreng then this one would definitely bedazzle your palate. If not, avoid this overpriced item.

Then there is the assorted naan made into pizza which is also another clever fusion of the local favourite with toppings of fancy and pricy ingredients. I tried this Spicy salmon with red bean and cheese and some green salad as well as spicy sauce with corn. I would say it was okay for a RM 15.90 naan for as you can see, there are salmon and arugula which again is a clever use of ingredient. Just make sure to be extra careful when eating this cause mine was undercook and I could still play with the dough beneath the toppings.

As usual, I look forward to the end of every meal to taste the dessert. Here at the wondermama, desserts were exotically unique and diverse. There are cheesecakes and stuff, as well as the local kuih. For chilled desserts, there is this Wondermama Cendol which I thought was really pretty when served but when tasted, I got a little disappointed. I am not too sure about the freshness of their coconut milk but I am almost certain they weren’t fresh coconut milk. However, it is nice to see them being so generous with the gula Melaka as that is the essential ingredient in cendols.

Hopping to the Skippy's pizza OK Aug 13, 2013

Pizza is great especially when it made such simple and easy meal on one of those lazy days when you decide to not cook or eat out. To have Pork pizza is even more amazing for that pork lover and to have more than just pizzas on the menu should be a plus point for any pizza house. Foodeverywhere reviews the variety on Skippys’ menu and I really like their lamb.

The Green Salad (RM9.00) was the first to be served and this is obviously good news for butterhead lettuce lover as there the main green in it is this vegetable itself. Topped with cherry tomatoes and julienne carrots and cucumber, every mouth can be easily consumed without falling off your fork. The dressings are enlightened with herbs and spices to give that mild flavouring which I reckon is perfect as side for a meaty meal.

Since pizza and pork should be the star in this place, the pizzas were given quite a bit of spotlight. Those toppings are generous on a thin crust resulting in very flavourful slices. Each slice is completed with a solid texture meat ball.

But I think the lamb pizza is really amazing. So much more to my liking compared to the pork pizza. The Meat Lover is basically loaded with lots of pork. With the amount of pork, expect a little fatty oil and succulent texture in every bite of thin crust with pork bacon, pork ham, pork pepperoni, minced pork and BBQ sauce. (Price: RM 32.00 for 12 inch and RM 26.00 for 9 inch).Marc’s Special would absolutely appeal to those with an overpowering flavour of herb aroma, garlic in particular. Also combining that with the pork ham, baby spinach and egg, as well as mushrooms which by the way is one amazing pair with garlic. (Price: RM 32.00 for 12 inch and RM 26.00 for 9 inch)

And the star of them all would be the Lamb Pizza, which is stunning because. Similar to most pizza, there is sun-dried tomato, bell peppers, olives, onion, and the perfectly minced lamb. The meat is really soft but not mushy and it is mildly flavoured with the usual distinctive lamb flavour. (Price: RM 33.90 for 12 inch and RM 27.90 for 9 inch)

The Burgers are what got us here because they are the new item at the Skippys. I tried three of the new ones and once again, I am in love with the Lamb Burger with Fries. I’m loving the soft patty so nicely minced and moderately accompanied by the amazing size of the sesame bun. Fries were not served too much cause that might just steal the space for the buger. Besides, the fries were somewhat ordinary so you don’t need too much of that. The burger and fries combination is selling at RM 14.90.With the prominence old menu of pork as the main ingredient, the new menu also comes with pork patty for the Pork Burger. The pork patty would be greater if is minced a bit more fine and served a bit thicker for that better texture. The Chicken Burger did okay with the patty, but if they are thin then that’s when it could be overcooked and hence resulting at a tougher texture.Having said that, the burgers are relatively bigger in diameter compared to many other places.

They serve pastas and steaks as well. The Spaghetti Aglio Oilo has a great texture. Same goes with the Chessy Pork Meatballs (6 pcs) with spaghetti and the new Lamb Meatballs (6pcs) with chessy sauce and spaghetti but the later two obviously win my palate with the flavour and topping on the pasta itself.

And for the meat lovers out there, how about A rack of ribs with potatoes and salad for a affordable price of RM 23.90.The best way to eat this would be caveman style, I recommend getting your fingers dirty and digging it in before they are gone.

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles | Dim sum

Chinese restaurants in malls are doing a great job providing both ala carte and family dishes meal menu to cater to shoppers. The Dragon-i is absolutely one of the few popular ones with a light variety of dim sums, noodles, rice and dishes of different poultries, seafood, and vegetables. Every now and then, they have seasonal ingredient, meaning seasonal featured dishes etc. The most famous DimSum namely the Shanghai Xiao Long Bao is nothing compared to the ones on the street in China. However, when served hot and made to steamed upon each order, would taste as good. The thing about the chefs in most of these outlets is that they like prepping these for instant on the go whenever there is an order. This results in hard tip on the top of those dumplings. Using napa cabbage leafs at the bottom of those dumpling in the steaming basket is a brilliant move because the leafs have got its natural sweetness and the mildly refreshing sweet fragrant enhances the taste of the steaming dumpling.

And speaking of enhancing the flavour, nothing beats black vinegar with julienned ginger. The combination is absolutely mind blowing.

Deep Fried Beancurd with Salt and Pepper is a devil that is a must have. The skin is amazingly crunchy with the taste a slight salty and spicy hot pepperish. And on the inside is the blasting soft and smooth beancurd which is very milky flavoured with soya bean. The dipping sauce of Thai Chili sauce compliments this dish beautifully.

Another starter which was a blunder by choice is the Corn Soup which is quite crappy if you ask me. There isn’t any natural sweetness from corn despite it being the main ingredient in this soup. The soup is basically starchy with egg flowers and few pathetic corns to make up this tiny bowl selling at Rm 12.

Well, you know what they say about prices and dishes. Just can’t expect too much when you are undercharged. On the other hand, the Braised Sharks Fin Soup with Hairy Crab Meat was a different story. It is served to be suitable for about 2 pax, and selling at Rm 128. And it promises rich ingredient which I don’t quite encourage eating.

If indeed craving for soup, or must have soup then go for their noodle menu. Dragon-i sells rather palatable meal with not only noodle and soup but a fair bit of vegetable with meats as well. This Pork Rib LaMien is one of which that is lovely to be enough for just one person. The soup is clear and very suitable to go with the pork rib.

If soupy noodles are too bland for your palate, then the Fried Seafood Noodle would be lovelier. The powerful flavour of black pepper gives all the flavour to this dish. The noodle is handmade and the texture was great to be prepared this way. Think thick pinched mee hoon kuih cooked in stir fried style and you would feel the resemblance in the two textures.

Upon entering, it is almost immediate to tone yourself and easily blend into the cozy and comforting lighting in the restaurant. And of course, the warm welcoming greeting by PAHTIMAH, at the doorway. The dishes are all heart warming and the platters are something to be bragged.

The platter that was very enjoyable that night was the Kembong Fish Platter that is common to be found on the menu of most Thai restaurant, be it the authentic ones or the fusion ones. It is a very simple dish consisting of mainly very natural ingredient in it with no addition of heavy spices and flavouring. There is the grrens, which most might not like it as they are somewhat raw.

And some fried brinjal and kembong fish which again might not have been the favourite fish to most people out there. the kembong fish itself is flavourful and many find that unacceptably fishy. However, this dish works its own magic with this combination as well as the most important element to sparkle the taste bud, the chili sauce. Strong belancan and strong chili making this my favourite sauce for the night. I thought it was another wonderful dish for sharing at the price of R M18.

We were served two fishes both I find it awesome with the flavours if done correctly. The first is the Thai Style Steamed Fish. Don’t expect them to top the freshness in the seafood, and yet they also did try hard with the flavour of the dish. The ingredients and spices on this fish is flooding the hot metal fish shaped plat and the gravy didn’t quite meet up to the usual Thai style that is really rich and tangy spicy.

Follow by the yummy Golden Orchid Special Fried Chicken at RM 18 which is delectably great to go in a meal of dishes and rice. Once again, this is nothing too Thai or rather it has already very much localized to our local palate. Nevertheless it was still good. The chicken was amazingly marinated so it was really flavourful.

The dishes were not spicy at all, despite to supposedly be Thai dishes, which commonly is well known to be spicy. This also applies to the Paku Pakis which is definitely my favourite. Thai or no Thai, I love this one. Here in the Golden Orchid, the vegetable which belong to the fern leaf family, is done stir fried with sambal belacan The vegetable is sweet and crunchy at the same time pleasantly tender because only young stalks were use. Thumbs up for that!!

Thai Fish Cake serves at RM 14 and it was the least favourite of mine so far. The texture was really rough and unpleasantly coarse in texture. Not the best I’ve had.

Good thing the Thai Style Omelette manage to redeem their reputation with the very fluff and light texture as well as superb wok heat to ensure the perfect crisp on the outside and fluff on the inside omellete. Must be lots of oil there, but it was awesome! It was priced averagely at RM 15.

Candied Tapioca which sells at RM 4.80, but this one is nothing too impressive. I would definitely prefer the texture to be slightly softer and more flavourful within the tapioca itself.

The dishes are all fairly priced and very decent for family meals. The flavours are very mild for Thai flavours but great with the oriental touch.

The Golden Orchid is located in PJ in one of the shop rows in Jalan SS 22. It would be hard to locate them without the GPS, especially with the construction that is going on nearby. And if you are not familiar with that area, it might take you a while to find it. With all the apps and GPS tracking on the smart phones, be rest assure that you’ll find this place in no time. There are lots of parking spaces, and during the night time, it would be difficult to miss the vibrant lighting of the restaurant’s name.

Serving oriental Thai cuisine, the flavours of their dishes are very much already tuned to favour the local palate. Starting with their Tom Yam Seafood which sells at RM25 and RM45 for two different sizes respectively, the combination of all flavours in this is complimenting one another so well there is nothing that was excessively over throwing anything other flavour in the soup. It looks trenchantly sour and spicy, but the taste was irresistibly seductive.

The seafood is ordinarily usual but they serve quite a bit of their dishes of mainly seafood. Speaking of which, the platter comes in a combo mix of few dishes which is accompanied by this tangy and mildly spicy dipping sauce. Great and perfect for sharing, this Golden Orchid BBQ Combo Platter serves at Rm 68.Comes with lots of lambs and prawns and squids, the grilled ingredients is perfect to go with the dipping sauce and apart from the lamb which already has a distinctive flavour of its own, the rest preserves the natural flavour and prevails to stand out with their fresh texture.

Fried Fish with Keng Som is amazing with all the mix flavours of tangy and delectable spices submerging within the fish. The sourish flavour is appetizingly interesting with lots of other vegetables in it.

I love what they did with the Buttermilk Prawn as well. Lovely prawns with a lot of gravy which so coincidently is to my liking. I don’t see how this is any bit very Thai because in Malaysia, people eat this all the time which I am not surprise since the two country have so much similar influences in culture. Except that this one here has more gravy than the usual that we have.

Lastly, my favourite Thai dessert Tub Tim Krob sells at an average price of RM 4.80 each. There is not enough coconut milk in it so the flavour truly lacks a little.
