Beautiful Bulgogi Smile Sep 15, 2013

I suddenly realised, albeit belatedly, that 9 Sept is my marriage anniversary. It doesn't help that it was a Monday, a day which usually wifey and I would usually stay back late at work due to work that piled up over the weekend. I had to quickly plan something, else wifey would be very cross with me. I decided to bring her to Paradigm Mall for dinner, and I was advised by a colleague to go to Bulgogi Brothers. So we went hunting for the restaurant, which turned out to be nearby The Loaf. There weren't that many patrons on a Monday evening. Once we walked into the restaurant, the smell of beef being cooked assaulted us. Slightly gamey, it was definitely very aromatic. There were adequate seatings, about 80 seats in the restaurant, with another 30 seats for al fresco dining. On every table, a piece of paper in lieu of placemats introduced us to the main offering, the bulgogi. Literally translated as fire meat, it is basically seasoned meat prepared and grilled by the tableside. We ordered the Bulgogi Brothers Special, 400gm for 2 persons.

It was a combination of both Unyang and Gwangyang style Bulgogi. The Unyang bulgogi is made from minced beef marinated with the distinctive unyang soya sauce and fruit juice, creatively hand-pressed into heart shapes, while the Gwangyang bulgogi is thinly sliced lean beef seasoned in their special soy sauce and fruit juice, retaining the beef's delicate taste. The set included some cut onions, sliced carrots, two pieces of button mushrooms and some garlic. The waitress used beef fat to oil the grilling pan, creating a strong beefy aromatic smell.

I was rather miffed that the smoke kept coming towards me, but that can't be helped. I'd probably go home later smelling like a side of cooked beef.

While the unyang meat was merrily sizzling, another waitress brought a threesome sauce as well as a basket of salad leaves with cucumber slices. I guess we were supposed to take the bulgogi meat, dip it in the sauces and wrap it in salad leaves before consuming it in a mouthful.

The meat is nearly done. It looks really juicy. Once it is done, we dipped and wrapped and popped it into our mouth. The burst of taste was extremely delectable. Full of beefy goodness, the meat also had a slight fruity taste to it. Juicy and decadent, it was slightly salty, but goes very well with the salad leaves.

Next comes the grilling of gwangyang meat. The slices of meat was pre-mixed with julienned leeks and onions, which gave it a good aroma when it is being grilled.

Grilled until dark brown, it was less juicy compared to the unyang meat, but still quite delicious. It was recommended that we accompany the meat with makguli, a Korean traditional rice wine with the added goodness of sweet milky rice wine, but seeing that it was a weekday night, we regretfully declined the alcohol. It was a good eating session with wifey, and the heart shaped unyang definitely made our anniversary dinner just a little bit more special.

Succulent Grilled Fish & Prawns Smile Jul 26, 2013

One of the up and coming areas in Ara Damansara is the Oasis Square which houses a quite a number of eateries to cater to the working crowd as well as the residents of Ara Damansara. I usually patron Old Town White Coffee, and while I was there last week, I noticed a good amount of crowd in a restaurant called Bad Boy Cooks. Hence, I decided to pay them a visit for dinner last Wednesday, expecting to splurge on a good amount of moolah.

The exterior was quite nicely decorated, with a menu stand right outside for people to browse through. A friendly lady came out of the restaurant to greet us while we were browsing. The price range wasn't very high, averaging about RM15 per person, which was good. They don't have alfresco dining unfortunately. However, the number of tables in the restaurant was quite sufficient to cater to a crowd of about 70 people. There were also some limited booth spaces for those who want a bit more privacy.

The theme of the restaurant looked quite American, with its plastic chairs and metal tables.

At first I thought they would serve pork. However, it is a pork-free restaurant, although they do serve alcohol as indicated by the placard of them serving Somersby's apple cider. A pair of Heinz sauces were on every table for those who wanted them.

A big poster on the wall caught my eye. A cute depiction of an angel king supervising the other angel cooks. Their menu is not very extensive, but good enough for me. There were enough choices, and you can pretty much personalise the dish to your own preferences as there were quite a number of sauces and side dishes to choose from.

I ordered the grilled fish and prawns. There was a choice of either mushroom, peppercorn or pomodoro sauce. I chose mushroom, as I didn't want spicy or tomato sauce. As the menu indicated, it was basically dory fillet chargrilled with garlic butter and herbs. The ensemble doesn't look colourful, on the contrary, it looked rather drab, no frills at all. However, the taste is something else entirely. There were two good-sized dory fillets, grilled to perfection. The skin of the fish is slightly brown, while the meat is flaky and smooth. The garlic butter and herbs taste was quite apparent, however, the mushroom sauce was slightly more overpowering. Some slices of oyster mushrooms in the mushroom sauce was a good accompaniment. There were three small prawns given, fresh and succulent. No complaints there. It was served with some fries and coleslaw. I like the fact that the fries were slightly overfried, which gave it a superbly crunchy mouthfeel. The coleslaw is fresh, with slices of cabbage and julienned carrots tossed in salad sauce.

For an additional RM1, I added an iced lime tea, which would've costed RM4 if ordered a la carte. The drink was esentially teh o ais limau. It was refreshing, and not too sweet. Slices of lime gave the tea drink an extra tang. Definitely a good meal for me indeed. With the price tag of RM13 including the drink, it was a very decent amount to pay for real good food. As their motto goes, Bad Boy Cooks Real Food.

Woke up this morning feeling very hungry due to light dinner the night before. Usually on Sunday mornings, wifey and I are reluctant to go out, instead preferring to have some bacon and eggs at home. But since we were feeling very empty, we decided to head out to Paradigm Mall to visit Plan b, and to have a hearty breakfast, specifically their breakfast platter. When we reached there at about 1130am, the place was already very full. The indoor seating, which can sit about 50 people was also packed full to the brim, and we were ushered to the alfresco dining area, which was able to accommodate another 20 people or so. We were seated right in front of the dessert counter, which was extremely tempting.

Nevertheless, wifey and I agreed that we must have our main meals before gorging into dessert. So we ordered the breakfast platter. We got to choose how we wanted the eggs, either poached, fried, sunny-side-up or scrambled. I prefer my eggs sunny-side-up, and we also order the cappucino, which by the way could either be long black or macchiato, depending on your preference. While waiting, the waiter served us some water, in which he poured from a brown bottle. Very creative use of recycled products, I must say.

Cutleries were given, together with a Plan b napkin.

After waiting for a while, and I thought that the service was pretty quick, considering the amount of customers, my breakfast platter came. Yaay!

The portion is big, but not humongously so, and I was able to finish it, although wifey did pick on some of it. From the top, there was my sunny side up, served on a piece of toasted bread, ciabatta I believe. The eggs seemed quite small, by the looks of the yolks, but tasted delicious all the same. The yolks were still runny, while the white are perfectly done. The toasted bread was crunchy on the crust and soft in the middle, just the way I like it. Moving on towards the right is the grilled turkey ham. It has some brown lines on it, indicating that it is well grilled, but still juicy. Slightly salty, it goes well with the toast. The chicken sausage was succulent, though I would still prefer pork ones. Too bad they don't serve pork, as it is a halal restaurant. The sausage was also well grilled with the brown lines present. The triangular hash brown was definitely freshly fried, as it is very crunchy in the outer part, and piping hot in the inner part. The baked beans were so-so, as I have tasted better. The beans seemed to be falling apart, not as whole as I would like it to be. The star definitely has to be the sauteed mushrooms. Savoury and balsamic, each piece oozes with sweet mushroom taste. The sauteed cherry tomatoes were also quite nice. Tangy and juicy, it cleanses the palate between each bites, which allows us to fully taste the rest of the platter. A cup of orange juice was part of the set.

A small cup, but sufficient. Pure orange taste, with bits of pulp in it convinced me that it is freshly squeezed. My cappucino's foam top was nicely decorated to resemble a fern, which I was sorry to destroy when I added in sugar and stirred.

Nothing like a good cup of joe after a heavy meal. It comes with a slice of almond biscotti, which we enjoyed immensely. While the dessert is a-calling, regretfully the stomach cannot handle any more, so had to give the dessert a pass. Will definitely order the next time. All in all, great food in a great place.

A small cooking pot given to each customer, personalised to their own tastebuds. Lots of ingredients on the conveyor belt to choose from. Meat is also aplenty, made to order. For those who don't cook, this is the best remedy. As long as the soup is boiling with the ingredients floating on top, it is ready to eat. Dip in the special spicy

chilli sauce, all of the items are simply delicious. The end result of the soup is always different from one pot to another.

The chilled sweetened honey sea coconut with longan in Imperial Garden Restaurant is quite nice. The honey sea coconut is double boiled until soft, but still retaining its white texture. There were lots of longans as well, though the longans used were essentially dried longans, not fresh ones. It was a bit too sweet for my palate. In order to balance that, I asked for some slices of lemons to add into the dessert, and with that, it tasted perfect.
