Chao Kuay Teow Smile Sep 01, 2013   (Related Review)

Ordered the chao kuay teow in Joo Hooi Cafe, as it is yet another Penang specialty. It arrived fairly quickly even with the huge crowd in the coffeeshop.

This chao kuay teow has quite a strong wok hei, and I really enjoyed the duck egg which is very strong in eggy flavour. It also has some big prawns which is very juicy and fresh. The only thing I do not like on this dish is that the cockles are overcooked, making it too dry without much taste left.

For RM3.50 this dish is fairly priced as the cheap price comes with a small portion.

Asam Laksa Smile Sep 01, 2013

Located at Lebuh Keng Kwee, this restaurant is among one of the famous ones in George Town. I ordered a famous Penang dish, which is the Asam Laksa. There was quite a lot of people ordering this dish, but surprisingly I did not have to wait for long.

This dish is very strong in flavour and taste. It is quite spicy. However, I really enjoyed the thick fishy broth and after adding in the prawn paste it becomes a delicious dish. The noodles were well cooked as they are soft but firm. All in all, a good bowl of Asam Laksa.

Dry Pan Mee OK Aug 31, 2013

My client brought me here for lunch one day, and I find the location of this restaurant quite strange. The indoor seating is hidden downstairs in a building and the outdoor seating is upstairs.

I ordered the Dry Pan Mee because I saw many people ordering it as well.

The Pan Mee here is not too bad. The good thing about this dish is that the thick flat noodles are well cooked as they are al-dente. The gravy is not too bad as well, as it is quite flavourful. However, I find that the restaurant is quite stingy in their minced meat in this dish. The strange thing about this dish is also that they have sliced omelette.

They also gave 2 wantan in soup in a separate bowl which is has quite a generous filling though.

Penang Road Chendul Smile Aug 30, 2013

I was taking a bus to tour around George Town when a friendly Penangnite talked to me. He recommended me to stop by this place to try Penang's (And some say Malaysia's) best Cendol.

As a enthusiastic foodie, I would never let such an opportunity pass by, so I duly obliged and came off the bus to give this a try.

The crowd surrounding this humble 2 wheeled stall was quite a lot regardless that there was no space to sit and enjoy this dessert.

I went in to the coffeeshop and ordered the cendol from there and found that the price is 50c more expensive possibly for commission for the coffeeshop. If eaten outside standing the cendol costs RM2.10, but inside the coffeeshop it is RM2.60.

The cendol is awesome beyond words can describe. It is refreshing with the sweetness just right. It has a nice aromatic flavour from this cendol which most likely due to the Gula Melaka used. The cendol here is definitely the best that I have tried so far, and it is no coincidence that this stall has been a crowd puller for ages.

I ordered a side dish for sharing, and the only side dish that they serve is the Potato Strips with AWESOME sauce. Unfortunately, I am unsure if they forgot my order or were they short of staff that I had to wait for 15 minutes after I finished the burgers, in which I was very close to asking my money back and cancelling the order.

Regardless, they managed to serve the potato strips piping hot with a lot of sauce. The potato strips are just a nice name for chips. The awesome sauce that they use is the same sauce used in their burger which is their signature home made sauce. Apart from the signature sauce, they also put a lot of ketchup in the dish. Both of the sauces mixes quite well with the chips, making it a sourish, sweet and savoury affair. Perhaps it was due to my fullness and no continuity of the meal making me feel that this side dish is quite a letdown given their much delicious burgers earlier.

This dish costs RM4.50.
