To be honest, no trip to Penang is truly complete unless we splurge on a dinner at Bali Hai. Although most of the locals would say tht it is overrated and also somewhat overpriced, it just feels rather incomplete if we do not dine here. So what's a seafood dinner without crabs. Not just any kind of crab but Chilli Crab with it's sweet and spicy sauce which is perfect when dipped with fried mantao, which was pretty good when it arrived at our table. Everybody loved this dish especially since the crab is very fresh and the sauce was super good, nothing was left behind at the end of the night. Then we got the Steamed Tiger prawns. THIS WAS SO SO SOOOO GOOD! The prawns were super fresh cause minutes before they were still happily swimming in the tank, so the meat is super succulent & juicy. Plus it had a hint of chinese wine kind of taste to it so that just amplifies the sweetness of the prawns even more. I had so much of this. Because we just can't seem to get enough of seafood, we also ordered steamed tilapia in sweet soya sauce. Since the fish was super fresh there was no need to cover up it's nice sweetness with any kind of other sauce and that was a good decision that night - we all loved this dish so much. By the end of our meal all that was left on the plate was the bones of the fish. Since we need some vegetables to counteract our guilt for eating so much seafood, we also ordered a plate of the four heavenly kings stir-fried in belacan. I don't know why but they gave so much petai on this plate that it felt almost like a petai dish which I kind of turned away from. Though the petai-lovers at the table enjoyed this like crazy.  continue reading

Bali Hai Seafood Market is a must visit for those who enjoy fresh seafood in Penang. It is located at Persiaran Gurney, Georgetown. It is easily accessible. Steamed mantis prawn with ginger and spring onionsThis steamed mantis prawn is a definitely one of the highlights of this seafood restaurant. It is simply delicious. The mantis prawn is so fresh as the flesh is juicy, sweet and succulent. The sweetness of the specially made soya sauce make the mantis prawn more outstanding. It is best served with a bowl of steamed jasmine rice continue reading

Bali Hai Seafood Market is quite crowded especially during weekend. Customers have a choice to pick and choose their seafood from the rows of aquarium.Cheese Baked LobstersThis dish is the cheese baked lobsters. The lobsters are fresh. The flesh is very sweet and soft. They are not stingy to add the cheese on the lobsters. So, it is very cheesy. The taste of both lobsters and cheese combined perfectly. continue reading

Lo Mai KaiYou could also go for the much normal fare when landing at the land of Island of Pearl. There are quiet numerous stall over here that you could find to start your day on a smaller scale such as having a humble plate of Lo Mai Kai, a.k.a Glutinous Chicken Rice. It is steamed in a small roundish bowl while covering with a layer of aluminum foil to retain the heat. Upon request, they would be served upside down on the plate and there you have a nice serving of it. The rice is nicely seasoned with the savory condiments, alongside the tender chicken meat. Slices of mushroom also add some juiciness to it. Best eaten while hot with some chilli paste too continue reading

Have a visit to Gurney Plaza this morning to have dim sum. Lovely place, as Bali Hai did serve dim sum in the morning and seafood at night. There is a lot of variety and amongst are siew mai, prawn taufu roll salad, glutinuous rice "loh mai kai"; har kau (prawn dumpling). The siew mai is tasty but a little small in size. The prawn dumpling is fine with fresh prawn and here, they use stainless steel container instead of the bamboo for steaming. continue reading
