Many people I know subscribe to the idea that anything pork is automatically better. I would beg to disagree.El Meson's breakfast is mediocre, at best. It's bacon and pork sausage is all that it's got going for it, and even so, it's not that great. Bacon was dry, and the pork sausage was not the high-grade chunky type.Baked beans tasted like they came out of a can, and the bread was uninspired.Eggs were decent, but anyone that can't do good eggs should not even be in a kitchen.

El Meson's breakfast is mediocre, at best.

Baked beans tasted like they came out of a can, and the bread was uninspired.

Eggs were decent, but anyone that can't do good eggs should not even be in a kitchen.

A third trip to this place; there's just so much to try on their menu! Crispy fried trotter. A tender and juicy cut, well complemented by the apple sauce. Aubergines in red pepper sauce. Forgettable. Linguine with rabbit, olives, garlic confit and herbs. Not the star of the evening; the rabbit was even tougher and chewier than usual. Oxtail braised in Moscatel with matchstick potatoes. A hearty portion, but the meat tasted lacklustre, while the potatoes could have been less salty. Blood Orange

Blood Orange Sorbet with orange slices and cointreau. A perfectly prepared cold dessert that included lots of tiny sultanas.

El Meson, supposedly Spanish for The Tavern, is a breath of fresh air at Telawi, offering non-halal tapas and other European specialties. It's like a cross between El Cerdo and La Bodega. The Andalusian bean soup with pancetta is a thick, hearty starter, with lotsa kidney beans and cured pork belly at the base of the bowl. Calamares Rellenos (squid stuffed with minced meat sauce). Calamares Rellenos (squid stuffed with minced meat sauce). An interesting change from the typical squid recipes. Imagine fresh, not-too-chewy squid immersed in a gravy that looked like rendang but tasted like a rich bolognaise.

Paella with pork, chicken and chorizo. We weren't impressed with this initially, since it tasted somewhat Oriental and lacked the aroma of saffron. But it was still well-prepared _ a far cry from the mushy paella at many other outlets.

Confit of milk-fed suckling lamb leg with couscous and roast potatoes. Our favourite for the evening. The lamb tasted almost like fowl, with a fall-off-the-bone texture that made every bite a delight. Rather steeply priced at RM128, but it can easily be shared by two.

The size of the roast suckling pig was also kinda daunting, but the crisp skin and succulent, flavoursome flesh made it pretty addictive. Definitely as good as El Cerdo's, even though the "breaking the plate" ceremony isn't practiced here.

We hurried back here to try the tapas that we had missed the first time around. Manchego and serrano croquettes. An addictive snack, not overly oily or salty. Iberico pork strips with honey and paprika over a bed of caramelized potatoes. The pork was nice and tender, but the star was the melt-in-the-mouth, subtly sweet potatoes. Prawns wrapped in pancetta with apricot sauce and julienned crispy leek. On the other hand, this one WAS slightly too oily and salty. Still worth trying though. Iberico

Iberico pork shoulder with potato & bacon dauphonoise and baked apple. The meat was bit too bloody for our liking (especially since it was pork, not beef or lamb!). Nevertheless, it was a generous portion, with well-selected sides.

Sauteed chicken liver with sherry and onion marmalade. The best chicken liver we've had in years. The sherry made it awesomely tender and imparted an extra sweetness that turned each mouthful into a taste of heaven.

A third trip to this place; there's just so much to try on their menu! A top-notch platter of cold cuts, featuring Iberico ham, serrano, parma, pancetta and salami, with melon and olives. Porky breakfast at El Meson is heavily overrated. The pork sausage was decent but didn't taste much different from an extra salty chicken sausage; bacon was a little too tough, toast was unimpressive, and mash was a little too soft and not enough crispy.Sauteed mushrooms were nice and juicy, and big points for offering poached eggs as an option. It would be a decent breakfast if it weren't so pricey.

I bought this Groupon deal for RM12.50, but the actual menu price is RM29. It comes with 2 eggs, bacon, homemade pork sausage, hash browns, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms and toast. It was pretty filling as I couldn't finish all of that without seeking assistance from my boyfriend. The poached egg was too cooked to my liking, not to mention a little dull in taste. The bacon was too dry, hence the resistance as I tried to chew. The pork sausages weren't too bad. Hash browns wasn't spectacular (Mc

So were the baked beans and sautéed mushroom and toast. Overall, I did not see the value of RM29.
