Century egg dumplings Smile Apr 25, 2014
Categories : Chinese | Kopitiam | Noodles

I insisted to visit this kopitiam after a terrifying breakfast at a shop near to this Sandakan Kopitiam.

Ordered to take away century egg dumpling and also stuffed bean curd (fu-pei guen). The century egg dumplings were great! Personally, I dislike century egg, because of the smell and the taste is hard to take. However, this century egg dumplings had diluted smell of century egg, and with the aroma of wanton skin and minced pork meat. Must try this century egg dumplings.

The stuffed bean curd seems too meaty for me and my friend. Lack of bean curd taste and aroma, which makes one seems like having steam minced pork meat (Jing yuk beang). Maybe it will taste better if dip with the chilli sauce.

Recommended Dish(es):  Century egg dumplings

Terrified breakfast Cry Apr 25, 2014

Drove to look for fish noodles at 88 market place, and a friend of mine had tried this shop before get us there.

My friend initial order for fish noodles was fried fish with konlou noodles. Guess what? The noodles came as soup noodles and not fried fish. We are rushing so we did not made any complaint to change the fish noodles. I ordered just fish meat only. Mix grouper fish meat without noodles, just to try out the deep sea fish meat. WTF! The first bite of the fish was fishy and stinky, and not to forget the fish scales that were still attached to the skin. At that moment, I suspected that they served us overnight fish meat, in which they didn't sold out the night before, and that meal which we had was at morning around 9am. Heck! I would not step into this shop again for the stinky and fishy fish meat taste still fresh in my mind!

If ever I were back to hometown, I will patron this stall for either dine in or take-away drinks.

I love the cham suet (dong yin yeung) here, which I think I am addicted to it. Sometimes, when I do not want to have too heavy coffee taste in my drinks, I can order teh dik kopi suet (lighter version of cham suet with more tea flavour less coffee added). You should try their teh c suet as well. I could not forget how all those drinks taste from this stall. I think I had been purchasing morning tea from this stall since I am about 15 years old. They served fu-chuk yi mai (boiled barley with beancurd) which I find it too tasty even without sugar added; you can order without sugar by saying "fu-chuk yi mai kosong".

They served fruit juice and other type of herbal tea. Just inquire from them, which type of herbal tea of the day, and what type of fruit juice available.

Popiah basah and tauhu sumbat  Smile Apr 24, 2014

This mamak stall served the authentic mamak style popiah (springrolls).

They served both "popiah basah" and fried popiah, in which I prefer the popiah basah more. They apply a thin layer of their own-made savoury peanut sauce on the wrapper and with nicely done jicama (sengkuang) plus bean sprouts (taugeh). Simple but tasty popiah basah served. My brother likes their tauhu sumbat. The tauhu is stuffed with shreded cucumber and bean sprouts and served with the same savoury peanut sauce. They had fried prawn cracker and if you have not tried it before, you should take one just for the sake of tasting! The uncle can speak cantonese, for your information.

They also served satay at night, but at a different venue. Their satay stall is near MahaMaju Bandar Baru Kampar. You can see the same boss at the satay stall. I had only tried their satay ayam (chicken satay) which I likes it. I am not sure about other types of meat. They are not stingy with giving you onions together with their satay. Do remember to ask them to put in "bawang" for you as sometimes they might missed that.

Recommended Dish(es):  popiah basah,tauhu sumbat,satay

Random morning breaks OK Apr 24, 2014

While walking along the Gaya Street Market, you will bump into this coffee shop.

It is too noticeable that you might find yourself hard to get a place, although the turn-around time is quite fast.

They served a variety of foods, and one of the which is being mostly discussed is the laksa. The other available foods which I did not try, but you can see it at the menu board (ngau chap, claypot chicken rice, and vegetables)

I ordered one laksa to try and also iceberg lettuce with oyster sauce as I did not have enough vegetables. The laksa is quite similar to Sarawak laksa, in which I find that Sarawak laksa is tastier (my own preferences). This laksa for me, is quite blanc and even with a spoonful chilli paste added into the soup, the aroma or the taste for laksa was not being picked up. For those whom have not tried this laksa before, you might want to try for a first time, but after that you might not want to revisit the place for the same laksa as it really do not carry a 'wow' factor.

Recommended Dish(es):  laksa
