Brunch for two Smile Jan 04, 2016

A friend decided to try out Two Sons bistro for our brunch meet-up. It was a place that I have wanted to try for some time now but never got the chance to. However I was quite full by the time we met as I have gone to have breakfast with my grandparents beforehand, so we only got to try one dish which we ordered to share.

As always, we both ordered ourselves a latte each. The coffee was pretty good as it had a nice roasted flavour and creamy from the milk, but not overly so. I really liked this and for Rm 9 a cup, it was worth it.

To share, we decied to indulge in a plate of big breakfast and the operative word being 'big'. Honestly do not know how anyone is going to be able to finish this plate by themselves unless they are starving or something. This platter came with two sausages, poached eggs with a toast, hash brown, stir-fried mushroo, baked beans, ham, some tomatoes and a lettuce.

Even with the both of us, it was too much for the two of us. But it was actually pretty good which is what we look for in some good and hearty breakfast food.

Can't wait to be back here to try out their more well-known dishes like the clams/mussels and also their pastas.

Interesting Smile Dec 27, 2015

Based on a recommendation by my mom's friend, we made our way to Cheras to try dishes from Eight Treasures restaurant. Considering how hot today was, I really did not want to leave the house so you could imagine how sour my mood was by the time we arrived.

I had no intention nor desire to eat as I sulked and wished to be anywhere but outdoors. However I left feeling a hundred times better becasue the food served was very good.

We got fish paste stuffed chillis and it's weird, because the ones we usually get at Yong Tao Fu places uses red chillis. Yet here they served us green and I really really liked them - I don't know how to explain the difference in taste but there just is. Plus it was deep fried and served piping hot, which is just the way I liked these.

This however was not my favourite because it was stir-fried petai with minced pork & bean sprouts. There was just too much of the former for me to enjoy anything about it because every piece of meat stank of the petai which I really could not stomach.

And because I wanted some green veggies to compensate the stinky dish, we got ourselve a nice plate of stir-fried HK kailan with garlic. This I liked and probably finished the entire dish myself since the other were more into the petai dish. No complaints coming from me that's for sure.

Then came the dish that I really really liked that day was the deep fried fish, one for each of us. I am not a hundred percent sure what kind of fish it was, but it tasted really good because it was well seasond before being deep fried to crisp golden perfect. Almost all the bones could be eaten and the head too because that's how crispy it was.

Even though I went there expecting the worst because of my sour mood, I do like the food served at Eight Treasures. Would probably return whenever we get the chance to.

Lunch Smile Dec 15, 2015

For lunch after running errands with my friend, we decided to grab something to eat nearby Nu Sentral since we were already there. Plus we wanted to re-visit Brickfields area since it's been a year or two since we had been around there after we were done with college. We saw Chilli Espresso which was very new to us so we decided to give it a try.

For me, I got the ulam fried rice with sambal chicken. I actually really liked this because thr rice was very fragrant and also a very substantial portion, not just for a normal eater like me but also a big eater. Then the chicken tasted super good especially with the sambal which was spicy but there's also a subtle sweetness to it which I liked a lot.

My friend ordered the grilled chicken with black pepper sauce. Actually this was pretty good too because I tried some of it and wished I had ordered this instead. The only thing is that I'm not a super fan of chicken so that's why I opted for the rice instead. Though this made me change my mind for a second.

Although I was a little apprehensive about this place upon entry, but I was pleasantly surprised. Which explained why there was quite a few people already eating there even though it wasn't quite lunch time yet. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu and perhaps have some of that chicken again.

Marriage Brunch Smile Dec 15, 2015

A friend of my mom's recently got registered and as a treat, the happy couple decided to bring us to lunch. It was my first time at Noble House and I could sort of understand why they chose to have lunch there.

This was the four season starter. There was deep fried shrimp with mayo and something else which I currently can't remember anymore. Although the decoration of it looked rather exciting, the food was merely mediocre at best. Which explains why I could not remember what the rest of the other four things were.

They also ordered one whole steamed chicken. Now this I remembered it being pretty good because the meat was succulent without being dry, plus it has super good flavour. Most people at the table said it had a 'chicken' taste which I really didn't understand. But everyone really enjoyed this dish and finished it all up.

Then there's this super decadent and luxurious beancurd dish. Usually I wouldn't be too interested in anything beancurd related because it's just not my favourite. But this dish changed my mind and I believe it had everything to do with the thick & slightly heavy-bodied sauce. I could eat this with a bowl of rice and be very happy the end of the meal. Everyone loved this dish too and not a single drop of sauce was left behind.

And then there's the fish dish. This was pretty amazing too because the Soon Hock was succulent, crunchy and very juicy which proves how fresh it was before being served to our table. However I think what made it even more amazing was the sweet soya sauce that had been steamed with the fish. I loved it a lot especially when poured over my portion of fish and eaten with a little bit of rice.

Finally, no proper chinese meal is considered complete until this dish arrives, braised mushroom with assorted seafood. There are abalone slices, fish maw, mushrooms and also dried oysters braised in a very decadent sauce which reminded me a lot of the sauce that came with the beancurd. I really liked this dish too and mopped up most of the sweet but also very heavily flavoured golden liquid of a sauce. Everyone at the table loved it too.

Will we return on a regular occasion, we probably will however I am not too sure when. Can't wait till we do.

Birthday  Smile Dec 14, 2015

It was an aunt's birthday that day and we were all craving for good thai food. Since we were around Kepong area, they decided to bring us to try this thai place which they gave quite good reviews of. I went with high hopes because Thai food is really my favourite.

No thai food dinner is complete without ordering Tom Yum Soup and we got a pot of White Seafood tom yum to share. It was as expected and served in a claypot steaming hot. The soup was spicy with a nice touch of sourness. This was pretty good however slightly small portion wise as it only yielded about five bowls of soup at most. But the plus side however, the prawns and squid were very fresh so those added a nice sweetness to the soup.

Instead of the usual mango salad that we'd get, my aunt suggested trying this pickled brinjal that comes with salted eggs. The idea of it was very unusual and when the dish arrived, I was quite put off by how anemic the vegetable looked. Although it did not taste bad and had the soury-spicy kick you would usually get from a mango salad, the spongy pickled brinjal was just not to my liking.

Then because we were all craving for it, we got the steamed squid with garlic, lime and chilli sauce. This was amazing because it had everything that I like. The sauce is super spicy and sour which compliments the succulently sweet squid that was super fresh. I couldn't stop going back for more and more of the sauce that remained hot throughout because of the heat it sat on top of. But the squid never got super crunchy and overcooked which makes this dish the star of the night. Perfect.

There was plenty more on the menu that looks amazing which we have yet to try. So we will most definitely be back for more some time soon.
